Chapter 9

The heavy silence in the grand ballroom felt suffocating. Senator Vance walked slowly across the polished marble floor, his polished leather shoes stepping carefully around the dented silver trays and the puddles of water from the fountain. He looked entirely out of place yet completely in control, like a wolf entering a pen of cornered sheep.

"Senator Vance," Elena said, her voice shaking with a mixture of raw terror and blinding fury. She clutched the gold signet ring tightly in her fist until the metal dug painfully into her palm. "You murdered my father. You used my mother as a scapegoat, and all this time you pretended to be our family friend."

Senator Vance stopped ten feet away, sighing softly as if he were dealing with an unruly, misinformed child. He adjusted his silk tie with immaculate precision.

"My dear Elena, your father was a brilliant man, but he was dangerously impractical," Vance said, his tone dripping with patronizing calm. "He thought a global financial infrastructure could be dismantled by naive idealism. The Vanguard Foundation funds critical developmental projects across three continents. Without our network, thousands of people lose their livelihoods. Sometimes, a few sacrifices must be made for the greater good."

"You call murder and corruption 'the greater good'?" Julian stepped forward, placing himself squarely between Senator Vance and Elena. His wet tuxedo made a faint squishing sound against the floor, but his stance was rock-solid. "You embezzled millions to fund your political campaigns and private offshore accounts. You aren't a savior, Vance. You're a common criminal hiding behind a government badge."

Senator Vance’s polite smile vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, hardened stare that revealed the ruthless predator beneath the polished political exterior. He raised a single hand and snapped his fingers.

The four armed private security guards instantly unholstered their suppressed firearms, raising them with practiced precision and training their sights directly on Julian and Elena.

"You always were entirely too arrogant for your own good, Julian," Vance said coldly. "Arthur made the same mistake—thinking he could outmaneuver an empire with a few stolen documents. But unlike Arthur, you won't even get a funeral."

Elena’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked desperately around the massive, empty ballroom. The police officers who had escorted her mother away were gone, having been pulled out by Captain Vance’s decoy dispatch call less than ten minutes ago. They were entirely isolated, cut off from the outside world.

"You can't kill us both in the middle of a public estate," Elena challenged, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound brave. "People know we're here. The media will ask questions."

"The media will report a tragic domestic dispute," Vance replied smoothly, taking a slow step forward. "A disgraced daughter and a bitter former employee, driven mad by the arrest of Beatrice Vanguard, turning on each other in a violent murder-suicide. The narrative writes itself."

Julian didn't flinch. Instead, a grim, calculated smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"You really think we came here unprepared for your arrival, Senator?" Julian asked softly.

Vance paused, a flicker of genuine hesitation crossing his eyes. "What are you talking about?"
