Chapter 2

The sudden movement caught Elena entirely off guard. As Julian stepped aggressively past her, his shoulder caught her side with calculated force. She gasped, her arms flailing wildly as she lost her footing on the slick marble floor. With a sharp cry, she crashed backward into a towering pyramid of silver catering trays arranged neatly against the pillar.

The metal crashed down in a deafening cascade of noise. Dozens of heavy silver trays spun violently across the floor, clattering against the walls and scattering half-eaten appetizers and crystal glasses in every direction. Elena landed hard among the tangled heap of polished metal, the breath knocked entirely out of her lungs. Her black dress was smeared with remnants of expensive food, and her pristine hair came undone in a chaotic mess around her shoulders.

For a second, the entire ballroom stopped breathing. The elite patrons of the Vanguard Foundation froze in horror, their champagne flutes suspended halfway to their mouths. No one dared to move. No one dared to speak. The immaculate social hierarchy of the city had just been physically dismantled on the dirty floor of the grand ballroom.

Elena pushed a heavy silver tray off her lap, her eyes wide with shock and humiliation. Tears of absolute rage stung the corners of her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She scrambled up onto her hands and knees among the scattered debris, staring up at Julian with a look of pure, unadulterated murder.

"You absolute monster," Elena whispered, her voice shaking violently as she pointed a trembling finger at him. "You will pay for this with your life."

Julian stood completely still, his hands resting casually at his sides despite the dripping water and the cold draft sweeping through the hall. He did not look apologetic, nor did he look afraid. He looked like a man who had already calculated every possible outcome of this catastrophic scene and found them all entirely acceptable.

"Kneel and apologize!" Elena screamed this time, abandoning all pretense of aristocratic composure as she stumbled to her feet among the dented silver trays. Her voice echoed off the high vaulted ceilings, bouncing cruelly against the expensive art hung along the gallery walls.

Before Julian could answer, the slow, rhythmic click of expensive heels announced the arrival of Beatrice. The older woman in the dark green sequined gown approached with absolute, terrifying grace. Flanking her on either side were the two massive guards, their hands resting ominously inside their tailored jackets. The crowd parted instantly before them, terrified of catching Beatrice’s wrath.

Beatrice stopped just inches from Julian, her gaze dropping briefly to the wet fabric of his tuxedo before rising to meet his steady eyes. A slow, deeply unsettling smile touched the corners of her thin lips.

"You knew he'd attack her?" Beatrice asked quietly, her voice smooth like poisoned silk, pointing a manicured finger toward the shadows near the balcony.

Julian didn't blink. He turned his head slightly toward the darkness and replied, "I wanted to see what you'd do."
