Chapter 3

The heavy oak doors leading to the private upper balcony creaked slightly, drawing the immediate attention of everyone in the immediate vicinity. A tall, thin man in a charcoal-gray suit stepped out from the shadows, his face half-obscured by the dim architectural lighting. It was Marcus, Beatrice’s long-serving legal counsel and the man who secretly managed the vast, illicit financial network hidden beneath the Vanguard Foundation’s charitable facade.

Elena wiped a smudge of black caviar from her cheek, her chest heaving as she glared between Julian and the newly arrived Marcus. The revelation hung heavy in the damp, tense air of the ballroom. Julian hadn't just lashed out randomly; he had deliberately orchestrated a public confrontation to draw Marcus out of his hiding place.

"Is this true, Marcus?" Elena demanded, her voice cracking with betrayal as she looked toward the balcony. "Were you watching the entire time? Did you know he was going to destroy the display?"

Marcus did not immediately answer. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, his pale fingers steady and completely devoid of nervousness. He walked slowly down the marble staircase, each step sounding like a hammer blow against the silent floor. He cast a cold, analytical glance at Julian, whose wet tuxedo was beginning to dry under the harsh overhead chandeliers.

"Julian is a very thorough man," Marcus said smoothly, his voice carrying an icy detachment that made Elena’s blood run cold. "He doesn't do anything without a precise objective. Isn't that right, Julian? You wanted to test our security protocols by forcing a physical breach."

"I wanted to test your conscience, Marcus," Julian corrected sharply, taking a step forward. The guards instantly tensed, their hands shifting inside their jackets, ready to draw whatever weapons were hidden within. "Or whatever is left of it after twenty years of laundering money for the Vanguard board."

A collective gasp rippled through the gathered guests. Several prominent socialites took immediate steps backward, whispering frantically among themselves. The Vanguard Foundation was revered as the city's greatest philanthropic institution; accusing its leadership of financial crimes in public was tantamount to social and professional suicide.

Beatrice, however, did not flinch. Her green sequined gown shimmered under the lights as she let out a low, humorless laugh. She raised a single hand, signaling the guards to hold their position.

"Conscience?" Beatrice murmured, stepping closer to Julian until she could smell the chlorine from the fountain on his wet clothes. "You speak of conscience while you stand in my house, dripping water onto my floors, and throwing tantrums like a spoiled child."

"It's not a tantrum, Beatrice. It's an intervention," Julian replied softly, his voice dropping an octave. He reached inside his ruined tuxedo jacket and pulled out a heavy, waterproof leather folder, dropping it heavily onto the polished marble right at her feet.

Elena stared down at the folder, recognizing the embossed silver crest of her late father’s private estate stamped directly onto the leather.
