Chapter 7

The heavy mahogany doors of the grand ballroom clicked shut behind the departing police officers, leaving Julian and Elena alone in the vast, echoing space. The faint hum of the ventilation system was the only sound breaking the silence. Elena stared at the small encrypted flash drive resting on Julian’s palm, her mind racing to comprehend his final, terrifying words.
"What are you talking about?" Elena demanded, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. She stood up abruptly from the velvet settee, her ruined black dress catching on a stray piece of silver trim. "My mother ran the foundation with absolute control. There was no one above her. No one!"
"That's what she wanted everyone to believe," Julian replied calmly, slipping the flash drive back into his pocket. He walked deliberately toward the massive stone fireplace at the far end of the room, ignoring the dripping water from his tuxedo pooling on the floor. "Your father’s private office wasn't just his workspace. It was a command center. And before he died, he installed a failsafe that your mother never found."
"A failsafe?" Elena asked, following closely behind him, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and desperate curiosity. "How could you possibly know about that? You were just an outside security consultant."
Julian stopped in front of the ornate stone fireplace, tracing his fingers along the carved bas-relief of a hunting hound chasing a stag.
"I wasn't just a consultant, Elena," Julian said quietly, his back turned to her. "Arthur Vanguard was my uncle. He brought me into the firm three years ago, right before they realized he was getting too close to the truth. They thought they had eliminated every member of the family who knew the secret."
Elena staggered backward, her hand flying to her mouth to stifle a gasp. The revelation hit her like a physical blow.
"Your uncle? Arthur was your uncle?" Elena repeated, her voice trembling violently. "And you let me—you let my mother—treat you like a hired stranger all these months? You let her throw you into that fountain?"
"I needed them to lower their guard," Julian said, turning around to face her with a gaze so intense it made her breath catch. "If I had approached you openly as family, Beatrice would have had us both killed before we ever stepped foot inside this ballroom tonight. The only way to expose the entire syndicate was to force them into a public corner where they couldn't hide behind their lawyers."
Elena stared at him, the pieces of the puzzle finally snapping together in her mind. The sudden attacks, the dropped chalice, the staged confrontation—it had all been an elaborate, high-stakes trap designed to draw out the real mastermind.
"If my mother wasn't at the top of the chain," Elena whispered, her voice barely audible, "then who gave the order to kill him?"
Julian didn't answer with words. Instead, he pressed down hard on the carved stone eye of the hunting hound on the fireplace mantle. With a deep, mechanical clunk, a hidden panel in the stone woodwork slid smoothly open, revealing a small, velvet-lined wall safe glowing with a soft blue digital light.

Elena stepped closer, peering into the dark recess of the safe. Inside rested a single, heavy gold signet ring bearing a crest she had never seen before—and a handwritten note addressed directly to her.
"Read it," Julian whispered, stepping aside. "The person who ordered your father's death is still walking freely among the elite of this city. And they know we just opened this safe."
