Chapter 7 - Shadows and Steel

The cold metal of the crowbar hovered inches from Sarah’s face, casting a dark, jagged shadow across baby Lily’s terrified eyes. Sarah didn't scream; the sheer adrenaline coursing through her veins locked her vocal cords, leaving her with only a cold, razor-sharp focus on survival.
"Touch her, and you spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security federal pen," Sarah said, her voice dropping an octave, steady and chillingly calm. "The cloud server already uploaded the audio file of Evelyn’s confession. Every second you stand in this house with that weapon, your sentence increases."
Marcus hesitated, his weathered brow furrowing as he glanced back at Evelyn, who was now pulling herself up from the sticky floor, clutching her bruised hip.
"Don't listen to her, you fool!" Evelyn snapped, smoothing down her torn white blouse with trembling, fury-filled hands. "She's a pathological liar. Break the phone, take the baby to the cellar, and finish what we agreed upon!"
Marcus tightened his grip on the crowbar, taking another step forward. The smell of cheap tobacco and stale sweat washed over Sarah. She braced herself to dodge left toward the pantry, knowing the risk to the baby in her arms was catastrophic, when a sudden, blinding flash of light illuminated the front windows.
Wooo-ooo-ooo.
The piercing, unmistakable wail of multiple police sirens tore through the night air, growing deafeningly loud in a matter of seconds. Headlights swept across the living room ceiling in frantic red and blue arcs.
Marcus froze, his head snapping toward the shattered front door. "You called the cops again?" he barked at Evelyn.
"I did not!" Evelyn screamed back, her aristocratic composure completely shattering as panic finally pierced her iron exterior. "The perimeter alarm must have tripped the silent dispatch!"
"We're done," Marcus cursed, dropping the crowbar with a heavy, metallic clatter against the tile. He bolted through the kitchen’s side service door into the dark yard, disappearing into the autumn fog just as heavy boots hit the front porch.
"Federal Marshal Service! Open the door!" a booming voice commanded from the foyer.
Sarah let out a long, shuddering breath, her knees finally buckling. She slid down the marble counter, clutching Lily tightly as the kitchen filled with armed agents in tactical vests.
Evelyn stood amidst the ruins of the cake, her face twisted in absolute horror as the lead agent stepped into the kitchen, pointing a badge directly at her chest.

"Evelyn Vance," the agent said coldly, "you are under arrest for federal mail fraud, witness tampering, and the unlawful confinement of Clara Vance."
