Chapter 11 - The Second Protocol

Connor stared at the flashing tactical transceiver in his hand, the glowing green digits reflecting wildly in his dilated pupils. The synthesized voice continued its mechanical chant, bouncing off the high ceilings of the grand foyer like a death knell.
"Phase two?" Sarah whispered, stepping out from the kitchen archway, her voice trembling as she held baby Lily close. "Connor, what does that mean? Who left that here?"
Before Connor could answer, the overhead lights in the kitchen and hallway flickered violently twice and then died completely, plunging the entire house into an absolute, suffocating darkness. The automated refrigerator hum cut out instantly, leaving behind a silence so dense it felt physical.
"Get down!" Connor yelled, lunging backward across the hardwood floor and pulling Sarah behind the heavy mahogany dining table just as a dull, concussive thud rattled the front foundation of the house.
A thick, grey plume of acrid smoke began to billow inward from the crawlspace beneath the front porch, smelling strongly of sulfur and burning insulation. The smart-home security system mounted by the front door suddenly flared to life with a blinding emergency crimson glow, flashing a terrifying warning across its digital display: CRITICAL SYSTEM OVERRIDE. PERIMETER LOCKDOWN ENGAGED. ALL EXITS SEALED.
"She rigged the house," Connor cursed, coughing as the smoke drifted into the dining room. He slammed his fist against the baseboard, trying to pry open the old Victorian floor-vent, but the metal grille had been welded shut from the outside. "Evelyn didn't just rely on the police or Marcus. She had a dead-man's switch installed tied directly to the federal marshal's booking system."
Sarah shielded Lily’s face with the damp hem of her beige dress, tears streaming down her cheeks not from fear, but from a blistering, righteous fury. "She'd rather burn the whole estate to the ground than let us walk out of here alive, wouldn't she?"
"It’s not just about us," Connor said, his voice straining as he shoved his shoulder against the heavy mahogany dining table, trying to flip it over to create a makeshift barrier. "If this house burns, every piece of financial evidence linking her to the municipal corruption goes up in smoke with it."
Suddenly, the electronic keypad by the front door began to beep frantically, playing a cheerful, high-pitched musical chime that sounded horribly out of place amid the creeping smoke. A mechanical voice echoed through the built-in intercom speakers:
