Chapter 13 - The Uninvited Heir

The sleek black sedan rolled smoothly up the winding gravel driveway, its high-beam headlights blinding Connor and Sarah as they lay sprawled on the damp grass behind the shattered patio doors. The engine cut off with a soft, expensive purr, and the driver’s side door swung open.

A tall man in a bespoke charcoal suit stepped out into the swirling smoke. He did not cough. He did not look panicked. He adjusted his silk tie with calm precision, stepping over a smoking piece of charred cedar that had fallen from the porch roof.

Connor pushed himself up onto his knees, his hands raw and bleeding, shielding Sarah and the baby with his body. "Who are you?" Connor shouted over the crackle of the spreading fire. "Get off this property!"

The man walked slowly toward the patio, his polished leather shoes crunching on the gravel. He stopped ten feet away, hands tucked neatly into his tailored pockets, and looked down at the burning estate with an expression of mild, detached amusement.

"Property?" the man said, his voice smooth, cultured, and chillingly familiar. "My dear cousin Connor, you still don't understand how this family operates, do you?"

Sarah’s breath hitched. She stared up at the man’s face, catching the sharp, slate-grey eyes that mirrored Evelyn’s exact gaze, though packaged in a younger, more dangerous form.

"Julian," Connor breathed, his face draining of what little color remained. "You were supposed to be in Zurich. Mother said you signed away your rights to the trust ten years ago."

Julian smiled, a cold, predatory curve of the lips that lacked any trace of warmth. "Mother lies, Connor. It’s the family business. I didn't sign away my rights; I simply transferred them to a shell corporation while Evelyn played the tyrant in the foreground. She was never the head of the table. She was just the guard dog."

Inside the burning house, a dull explosion echoed as a pressurized water pipe burst behind the kitchen walls, sending a shower of sparks flying through the shattered windows.

"Why are you here, Julian?" Sarah demanded, her voice cracking as she clutched baby Lily tighter. "Did you set the fire?"

Julian chuckled softly, pulling a thick manila folder from the inside pocket of his charcoal jacket and holding it up so the moonlight caught the gold-embossed seal.

"I didn't need to set the fire, my dear. The insurance payout on this historical money-pit clears my corporate debts and funds my campaign for the state senate," Julian replied smoothly. "And as for the child... under the emergency probate clause signed by Evelyn this morning before her arrest, any surviving minor offspring reverts to the nearest living legal guardian in the event of parental incapacitation."

Julian took two deliberate steps closer, extending his hand toward Sarah.

"Hand over the baby, Sarah," Julian said softly. "The house is gone, your husband is an escaped felon on paper, and I have two federal marshals waiting in my car to take you both to the county shelter."
