Chapter 5 - The Shattered Tier

The sickening thud of Evelyn hitting the floor reverberated through the grand dining room, followed instantly by a sharp, shattering crack. The edge of the matriarch’s heavy silver belt buckle had clipped the corner of the dining table, sending the top tier of the massive white celebration cake sliding off its pedestal. It hit the hardwood floor with a soft, devastating thud, exploding into a sticky mountain of white fondant, butter-cream frosting, and crushed sponge cake.
Baby Lily woke up instantly, letting out a sharp, piercing shriek that pierced the heavy air of the house.
Sarah stumbled back, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked down at Evelyn, who lay crumpled amid the ruins of the cake, her white silk blouse stained with red berry filling and white frosting. The older woman groaned, her silver hair coming loose from its tight bun, spilling in disarray across the sticky floorboards.
"Help me..." Evelyn gasped, her voice cracked and fragile, completely stripped of its magistrate-like authority. "Help me up, you ungrateful wretch."
Sarah stood frozen, the small digital voice recorder still clutched tightly in her trembling hand. The red recording light blinked steadily in the dim light of the dining room, a tiny beacon of absolute truth in a house built entirely on deception.
"You told me in this house you make the rules, Evelyn," Sarah said, her voice remarkably steady as she looked down at the fallen tyrant. "Looks like your foundation just crumbled."
Evelyn glared up from the floor, her eyes burning with a venomous, unyielding hatred. She didn't ask for forgiveness; she didn't show remorse. Even trapped in the wreckage of her own dessert, her mind was already racing, calculating, scheming her next move.
"You think a recording saves you?" Evelyn spat out, coughing as a smear of white frosting touched her lip. "The local precinct answers to my board members. By sunrise, that lawyer of Connor’s will be sitting in a holding cell right beside him, and you will be walking down that highway in the freezing dark with nothing but the clothes on your back."
Before Sarah could respond, a heavy, rhythmic pounding echoed from the front entryway. Bang. Bang. Bang. It wasn't the polite chime of the doorbell or the official knock of a patrolman. It sounded desperate, urgent, and deliberate.
Sarah clutched baby Lily tighter, backing away toward the kitchen archway.
"Who is that?" Sarah whispered, her eyes darting toward the foyer.
Evelyn gave a twisted, bloodless smile from the floor, wiping a smear of red filling from her cheek with the back of her manicured hand.

"That," Evelyn whispered back, her voice dripping with dark amusement, "is the man I hired to clean up loose ends before the police arrived."
