Chapter 9

The next morning broke grey and overcast, casting a pale light over the city skyscrapers as Julian and Clara pulled up to Marcus’s downtown office building. Clara looked revitalized, wearing a simple blue denim jacket and black jeans, her dark hair tied back in a neat, practical ponytail. Lily was sleeping peacefully in her carrier, nestled securely against Clara’s chest. The heavy silver rings on Clara’s left hand caught the fluorescent lights of the sleek, modern lobby as they walked toward the elevators. They rode up to the fourteenth floor in silence, each lost in their own thoughts about the confrontation that awaited them—not with Elena, but with the legal system that would dismantle her empire of control.
Marcus was waiting for them in his glass-walled conference room, a thick stack of legal briefs spread out across the mahogany table. He greeted them with a reassuring nod, gesturing for them to take a seat.
“Good morning, Julian, Clara. And good morning to you, young lady,” Marcus said, offering a warm smile to baby Lily, who remained blissfully asleep. Marcus sat down and slid a manila folder toward them. “I’ve spent the last three hours reviewing the preliminary data from the statements you found. Julian, your mother didn't just hide funds—she systematically forged your father’s signature on asset transfers spanning the last seven years.”
Julian felt a cold knot twist in his stomach. “Can we prove it?”
“With these documents and the journal detailing her coercion tactics, absolutely,” Marcus said firmly. “I’ve already contacted a federal prosecutor I trust implicitly. We are filing an emergency motion to freeze every single asset under Elena’s control, including the guest house and the main property.”
Clara leaned forward, her hands resting flat on the table. “Will she be able to come after Lily? Is there any legal loophole she can use?”
“None,” Marcus assured her, leaning back in his chair. “Under federal law, coercion and financial fraud of this magnitude entirely invalidate any claims of guardianship she might attempt to bring forward. She’s checkmated, Clara. Her entire empire was built on intimidation and stolen money, and it’s about to collapse.”

As if on cue, the double doors of the conference room burst open. Elena strode into the room, flanked by a nervous-looking junior associate from her own corporate legal team. She wore her signature dark purple dress, her short blonde hair perfectly styled, but her face was mottled with a furious, ugly rage.
“You arrogant little fools,” Elena spat, stopping at the end of the conference table and glaring directly at Julian and Clara. “You think you can destroy what I spent decades building?”
