Chapter 10

Elena’s presence sucked the oxygen out of the conference room. Her junior associate looked desperately uncomfortable, clutching a leather briefcase as if wishing the floor would open up and swallow him. Marcus didn't flinch; he simply stood up, towering over the conference table, and pressed a button on his desk intercom.
“Security, please escort Mrs. Vance and her associate out of the fourteenth-floor restricted zone,” Marcus said calmly into the speaker.
Elena slammed her hand down onto the mahogany table, the sharp crack echoing through the glass room. “You cannot do this! I am a pillar of this community! Julian, you ungrateful, pathetic boy—look at what I sacrificed for you!”
Julian stood up slowly, matching his mother’s height. The worried, helpless expression he had worn in the kitchen just forty-eight hours ago was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, unwavering clarity. He looked at Elena, seeing not an all-powerful matriarch, but a desperate, terrified woman whose entire identity was crumbling because she could no longer control everyone around her.
“You didn't sacrifice anything, Mother,” Julian said, his voice steady, calm, and resonant. “You consumed. You controlled, you manipulated, and you stole. But that ends today.”
Two uniformed building security guards appeared at the glass doorway, stepping hesitantly into the room. Marcus gestured toward Elena. “Remove them from the premises, please. They have no legal standing to be here.”

Elena’s face contorted into a mask of pure venom as the guards stepped forward, gently but firmly taking her by the arms. “You will regret this, Julian!” she screamed as they pulled her backward toward the doors. “You will never survive without me! You are nothing without my guidance!”
The heavy glass doors slid shut, cutting off the rest of her tirade as security escorted her down the hall toward the elevators. The conference room descended into a profound, heavy silence. Clara let out a long, shaky breath, burying her face in her hands for a brief second before looking up at Julian with tears of release streaming down her cheeks. The nightmare was finally over.
