Chapter 6

The sun was dipping below the horizon, casting long, bruised shadows across the manicured lawn of their modern suburban home. Julian parked his car a few houses down, waiting for Marcus’s silver sedan to pull up behind them. Clara sat in the passenger seat, holding Lily, who was awake now, cooing softly and playing with the edge of her blue onesie. The normalcy of the baby’s actions contrasted sharply with the suffocating tension gripping her parents. As Marcus stepped out of his car, adjusting his trench coat, Julian turned to Clara.

“Stay in the locked car with Lily,” Julian instructed gently, kissing her forehead. “Marcus and I will be in and out in ten minutes. We’re just getting the essentials and that journal.”

Clara nodded, her eyes wide with anxiety as she watched the two men walk up the paved driveway toward the front door. Julian inserted his key into the lock, turning it with a firm click. The door swung open, revealing the bright, sterile modern interior that now felt haunted. The kitchen island still bore the faint impression of the heavy silver keys he had slammed down that morning. But the house wasn't empty. Standing at the far end of the hallway, framed by the dining room archway, was Elena. She hadn't gone out at all. She wore her dark purple dress, her short blonde hair catching the dim evening light, her expression a mix of smug triumph and icy rage.

“You actually came back,” Elena said, her voice echoing in the hollow space. “How predictable. And you brought a lawyer, Julian? Have you completely lost your mind?”

Marcus stepped forward, flashing a professional, unflappable demeanor. “Good evening, Mrs. Vance. I am Marcus Thorne, legal counsel for Julian and Clara. We are here to retrieve personal property and documents. Any interference on your part will be documented as harassment and obstruction.”

Elena didn't flinch. She slowly walked toward them, her heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. “Property? Everything in this house was purchased with family trust funds that I control. They own nothing. And that child belongs in a stable environment, not dragged around by a mother who breaks down weeping in the kitchen.”

“Step aside, Mother,” Julian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. He walked past her without waiting for permission, heading straight down the hall toward the master bedroom where Clara’s private desk was located. Marcus stayed in the doorway, blocking Elena from following him.

“You are making a grave error, Julian,” Elena hissed, her voice rising in pitch as she realized her control was slipping away permanently.

Julian burst into the bedroom, flipping on the light. He went straight to the locked bottom drawer of Clara’s mahogany desk, pulling out a small brass key he kept hidden behind a painting. He unlocked the drawer, tossed aside a stack of medical bills, and found it: a thick, leather-bound black journal with Clara’s hurried handwriting on the cover. He grabbed it, shoved it into his jacket pocket, and grabbed a small box containing their birth certificates, passports, and social security cards.
