Chapter 9 - Sirens in the Distance

The sound of distant sirens began to wail through the rainy night air, faint at first, but growing steadily louder and more distinct with every passing second. The red and blue flashing lights painted the wet brick walls of the alley in erratic, pulsing strokes.

Dr. Harrison struggled to his feet, his pristine white lab coat now stained with mud, rainwater, and gray concrete dust. He looked down the alley toward the street where the first flash of cruiser lights cut through the darkness. His face was a mask of cold, unyielding fury, mingled with the bitter realization of defeat.

"You think the police understand what we do here?" Dr. Harrison spat, glaring at Chloe and Leo with undisguised contempt. "They see bodies; I see raw materials. They see murder; I see structural correction. This town is built on the teeth of people who couldn't hold their own bites together. Without me, everything collapses."

"You're going to prison for the rest of your life, Dad," Chloe whispered, her voice trembling as she backed away from him toward the mortuary door. There was no warmth left in her eyes, only a hollow, exhausting grief. "Mom didn't run away. You didn't 'correct' her. You murdered her and put her in that basement because she tried to stop you."

"She was flawed," Dr. Harrison said coldly, adjusting his ruined tie with trembling fingers. "Just like you. Just like him."

Before Leo could react, Dr. Harrison whipped around and bolted toward the rear exit of the clinic parking lot, disappearing into the labyrinth of dark alleys behind the building. Leo took a step forward to give chase, but his bleeding, battered hands throbbed with such intense pain that he stumbled, catching himself against the brick wall.

"Let him go," Chloe said softly, grabbing Leo’s uninjured arm to steady him. "He won't get far. The perimeter is already locked down."

Sure enough, a pair of police cruisers tore into the alleyway from the opposite end, their headlights blindingly bright, tires hissing against the wet asphalt. Uniformed officers spilled out of the vehicles, weapons drawn, shouting commands as they secured the scene.

Leo exhaled a long, shaky breath, sliding down the brick wall until he was sitting on the wet pavement, the adrenaline finally draining out of his system. The nightmare in the mortuary lab was over, but the ghosts of what they had discovered would linger forever.

An EMT rushed over with a first aid kit, kneeling beside Leo to examine his slashed forearm and bruised, concrete-scarred fingers. Across the alley, another officer was hauling Dr. Harrison out from behind a row of industrial dumpsters, cuffing the once-respected dentist in the pouring rain.

Chloe stood alone near the center of the alley, staring down into the dark puddle where the bloody red dental mold had disappeared beneath the muddy water.

"Miss Harrison?" An officer approached her gently, holding a warm silver blanket. "We need you to come with us to the station. We have a lot of questions about what's inside that basement."

May you like

Chloe nodded slowly, wrapping the blanket tightly around her shoulders. She took one last look at the dark, looming entrance of the clinic before turning toward the cruiser.
