Chapter 4 - Fractures and False Alarms

A sharp gasp escaped Leo’s lips as pain flared up his right arm, hot and stinging where the chipped concrete had scraped against his knuckles. He clenched his teeth, refusing to give Dr. Harrison the satisfaction of a scream, though sweat immediately beaded on his forehead. The white tile floor below was littered with fresh gray and white debris, mingling with the dust of the previous spill.
"See?" Dr. Harrison murmured, withdrawing the dental pick with clinical precision. A tiny smear of crimson now stained the tip of the metal tool, joining the invisible history of the room. "The shell is brittle. But beneath it, the flesh is still soft. Still human."
Chloe winced visibly, taking half a step backward. Her hand remained buried in her pocket, clutching the bloody red dental mold so tightly her knuckles turned white. She watched her father with a gaze full of a complex, terrifying mixture of awe and revulsion.
"You didn't have to cut him, Dad," Chloe muttered, her voice trembling slightly.
"Necessity dictates method, Chloe," Dr. Harrison replied smoothly, wiping the pick clean with a sterile gauze pad. "If he insists on clinging to his delusions, we must help him shed his illusions. Now, assist me in lifting him down. The delivery van awaits in the alley, and we have a long drive ahead before the morning shift arrives at the clinic upstairs."
Leo’s heart hammered frantically against his ribs. Move now, a voice inside his head screamed. If they get you into that van, it’s over.
With a surge of desperate adrenaline, Leo slammed his concrete-encased hands downward onto the stainless steel table, using the heavy blocks as crude battering rams. The metallic surface rang out with a deafening clang. Before Dr. Harrison could react, Leo swung his legs over the side of the table, kicking out with all his might.
His heavy boot caught the doctor square in the chest, sending Dr. Harrison staggering backward against the instrument tray. Stainless steel pans, scalpels, and forceps rained down onto the white-tiled floor in a chaotic clatter of metal.
"Run!" Leo yelled, though he had nowhere to run.
Instead of fleeing toward the door, Chloe lunged forward with surprising speed. She didn't try to stop Leo; instead, she grabbed the heavy orange bucket that had been used to mix the concrete, scooped up a handful of wet, sloppy sludge left at the bottom, and hurled it directly into her father's path as he struggled to regain his footing.
Dr. Harrison slipped on the wet cement, crashing hard onto the tiled floor. His glasses flew off, skittering across the room and shattering against a bone shelf.
"Chloe! What are you doing?!" Dr. Harrison roared, his calm facade shattering into pure, unadulterated fury as he glared up at his daughter.
Chloe stood over him, breathing heavily, the bloody red dental mold still gripped tightly in her pocket. She looked down at her father with eyes wide and unblinking, her voice barely a whisper above the ringing silence of the lab.

"I found the other mold, Dad," Chloe said softly. "The one from the basement safe. The one with Mom's initials on it."
