Chapter 8 - Breaking the Mold

The alleyway was a chaotic blur of gray rain, flickering yellow light, and cold brick walls. Leo burst through the mortuary door just as Dr. Harrison took a sharp step toward Chloe, raising the gleaming scalpel in his hand with deadly intent.
"Step away from her!" Leo roared, his voice cutting through the hiss of the downpour.
Dr. Harrison spun around, his eyes widening slightly in surprise as he saw Leo standing in the doorway, his hands free of the concrete shackles, though raw, bloody, and trembling with adrenaline. The doctor didn't look panicked; he simply adjusted his grip on the weapon and turned his full, predatory attention toward the new threat.
"You managed to break the cast," Dr. Harrison observed coldly, wiping rain from his glasses with his sleeve. "Impressive. But foolish. A broken mold cannot be recast once the clay has set."
"It's over, Doctor," Leo said, stepping out into the alley, positioning himself between Dr. Harrison and Chloe. He kept his grip tight on the surgical scalpel, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. "The police were already notified before I came down to the clinic. They have the duplicate files I uploaded to the cloud. They'll be here any minute."
Dr. Harrison’s expression darkened. For the first time, a flicker of genuine uncertainty crossed the older man's face. He glanced down the dark, empty alleyway toward the street, listening for sirens that weren't there.
"You're bluffing," Dr. Harrison said, though his voice lacked its previous absolute confidence. "A journalist chasing a phantom story doesn't have the foresight to back up files to the cloud."
"Check my phone in your office safe," Leo challenged, holding his ground despite the sharp pain shooting through his bruised and battered fingers. "It's broadcasting a live beacon. The moment it connects to an external network, your entire underground archive is downloaded to every precinct in the state."
Chloe pushed herself off the side of the delivery van, her eyes wide as she looked between Leo and her father. "Dad, just stop. Please. It's over. We can turn ourselves in. We can fix this—"
"There is nothing to fix!" Dr. Harrison snapped, his voice echoing off the brick walls with sudden, violent intensity. He lunged forward with the scalpel aimed straight for Leo’s chest.
Leo ducked instinctively, bringing his arm up to block. The razor-sharp blade sliced cleanly through the sleeve of his dark grey t-shirt, drawing a hot line of crimson across his forearm. Leo grunted in pain, but used his momentum to drive his shoulder forward, slamming directly into Dr. Harrison’s midsection.

The doctor stumbled backward, his wet shoes slipping on the slick pavement. He tripped over the edge of the puddle where the bloody red dental mold had sunk moments before, crashing down hard onto the wet asphalt.
