Chapter 7 - The Glitch in the System

The digital metrics on Officer Miller’s smartphone screen continued to spiral into a dizzying frenzy, the numbers flashing in bright green against the dark display. Baby Timothy lay flat on his back in the grass, his chest heaving beneath the colorful striped onesie as he recovered from his explosive, unscripted tantrum. Across the lawn, Baby Jaxson sat frozen in his designer stroller, his gold-plated pacifier slipping slightly from his slack jaw as he stared at his own shattered view count.

“That... that was impossible,” Jaxson stammered, his voice modulator failing and reverting to a squeaky, high-pitched toddler register that made his follower-toddlers look at him in sudden confusion. “You didn't use any trending audio! You didn't even drop a single bounce transition! How did you bypass the algorithmic filter?”

“Authenticity, kid,” Miller answered for him, stepping out from behind the boxwood hedge and walking over to stand above Timothy. The officer tapped his glowing badge, which now displayed a green verification checkmark. “The system is designed to reward engagement, but sometimes raw, unfiltered chaos overloads the circuits. You built an empire on smoke and mirrors, Jaxson. Timothy just dropped a truth bomb.”

Before Timothy could even catch his breath to savor his unexpected victory, the smartphone in Miller’s hand let out a sharp, discordant alarm—a sound that every influencer and police officer in the digital district feared above all else. The screen flashed from brilliant green to a blinding, toxic crimson.

“Officer Miller,” the automated dispatcher’s voice barked through the phone speaker, stripped of its previous robotic calm and replaced by frantic panic. “We have a catastrophic anomaly on the local network. The server isn’t just overloaded; it’s rejecting all incoming data streams from Maple Street!”

Miller’s stern expression returned instantly, his facial hair bristling as he bent down to inspect the glowing red display. “Explain, Central. What kind of anomaly? Is it a denial-of-service attack from the bot farms?”

“Negative,” the dispatcher replied rapidly, the audio cutting in and out with static interference. “It’s coming from deep within the core database. Someone, or something, is manually scrubbing the entire municipal ledger. All infant creator accounts are currently being flagged for unauthorized reality leaks. Your arrest subject... he didn't just break the trending tab. He exposed the source code.”

Timothy sat up quickly, rubbing his tired eyes with the sleeve of his striped onesie. The ringing in his ears from his epic tantrum was slowly fading, replaced by a cold, dreadful realization. “Source code? What does that mean? I just wanted my followers back!”

“It means,” a deep, unfamiliar voice echoed from the end of the driveway, cutting off the dispatcher entirely, “that your little stunt didn’t just fix your engagement, kid. It woke up the Algorithm Administrator.”
