Chapter 7

While the boardroom in Manhattan systematically dismantled Julian’s corporate existence, Julian himself was discovering the fragile nature of his self-serving relationships. Confined to his upscale apartment overlooking Central Park, he paced across the hardwood floors, his phone pressed firmly to his ear as he dialed legal counsel after legal counsel. One by one, high-priced attorneys declined his retainer, having already been briefed by the Holloway estate’s legal team regarding the criminal nature of the diverted funds. The realization that his financial lifelines had been severed overnight hit him with physical force, causing a cold sweat to bead across his forehead as he stared at the frozen bank account balances on his screen.

A sharp knock at the door interrupted his frantic pacing. Julian yanked the door open, expecting a courier with legal documents, but instead found Vanessa standing in the hallway. Her expression was hard, stripped of any pretense of warmth or affection. She pushed past him into the foyer without waiting for an invitation, dropping a designer handbag onto the console table with an audible thud. She informed him that her legal representation had advised her to return every gift and financial transfer associated with his name to avoid being implicated in the federal embezzlement probe. Julian stared at her in disbelief, stammering explanations about offshore accounts and pending corporate maneuvers that no longer existed.

Vanessa laughed bitterly, a sharp sound that echoed off the bare walls of the apartment. She reminded him that her association with him was purely transactional, designed to advance her own career in aviation management, and that hitching her wagon to a sinking corporate saboteur was a tactical error she intended to correct immediately. She warned him that federal investigators had already subpoenaed her communications logs, and she had surrendered every text and email proving Julian orchestrated the deliberate sidelining of Elena on the tarmac. As the door clicked shut behind her, Julian realized he was entirely alone, trapped in the expensive cage he had built with stolen funds, waiting for the inevitable knock of federal marshals at his door.
