Chapter 7: The Final Leverage

The rain had cleared, leaving the pine forest dripping and fresh under a pale, overcast sky. Inside the safe house, the atmosphere was focused and tense. Thomas stood by the central command console, tapping away at a keyboard, pulling up financial routing numbers and secure communication lines.

"The personal accounts are fully drained," Thomas reported without looking up. "Every offshore penny David scraped together over the years has been legally transferred into a humanitarian trust fund managed by our oversight committee. He is officially penniless, bankrupt, and stripped of every legal defense."

Maya walked over to the console, resting her hand on the edge of the metal desk. "What about his real estate holdings?"

"Frozen by the courts. The suburban house where he threw that pathetic birthday party is scheduled for foreclosure auction at the end of the month," Thomas replied, looking over at her with a hint of admiration. "You played a long game, Maya. Five years undercover as a civilian waitress just to map out the entire Vance financial network from the inside. Most operatives would have cracked under that kind of domestic abuse."

"It was a necessary sacrifice," Maya said quietly, her voice devoid of self-pity. "When my unit was disbanded and my identity compromised by corrupt officials tied to men like David, I needed a blind spot to rebuild. David thought he was the master of his domain. His arrogance made him blind to everything right in front of him."

"He wants to talk to you," Thomas said, spinning a monitor around to show a live feed of the courthouse holding room again. David was arguing furiously with his attorney, demanding an emergency meeting with the lead investigator or anyone in charge. "His lawyer is trying to cut a plea deal, but David keeps insisting on speaking directly to the source of the leak. He knows it’s personal."

Maya stared at the screen for a long moment, watching the man who had humiliated her in front of her child now reduced to a frantic, sweating wreck.

"Set up a secure, encrypted audio link," Maya instructed calmly. "Let him hear my voice one last time. It’s time to close the loop."

Ten minutes later, the secure terminal beeped, establishing a direct connection to the private phone in the courthouse holding room. David snatched the receiver up so fast he nearly knocked the wall-mounted unit off its brackets.

"Who is this?!" David barked into the receiver, his voice cracking with desperation. "Is this you, Maya? What did you do?!"

Maya picked up the handset, her voice steady, cool, and utterly devoid of emotion.

"Hello, David," she said simply.

Silence descended on the other end of the line. For a long, agonizing moment, the only sound was David's ragged, terrified breathing.
