Chapter 6: Unraveling the Empire

The federal raid on Vance Financial sent immediate shockwaves through the corporate elite, but the true devastation was happening quietly behind closed doors. David Vance sat in a holding room at the federal district courthouse, his expensive suit rumpled, his hair unkempt, staring blankly at the metal table in front of him. The swagger that had defined his public persona for a decade had vanished, replaced by the hollow, hunted look of a man realizing he had underestimated the wrong opponent.

His defense attorney, a sharp-suited veteran named Sterling, slid a thick stack of papers across the table.

"They didn't just leak the corporate accounts, David," Sterling said, his voice low and urgent. "Whoever did this has clean, unarguable proof linking your personal signature to every illegal transaction over the past five years. They even have the deed transfers for your vacation homes. Everything has been seized by the asset forfeiture division. You're facing forty years."

David slammed his fist against the metal table, the sound echoing sharply in the small, sterile room. "Find out who did this! It wasn't the SEC on their own. Someone fed them this data! Who has that kind of access?"

"That's the problem," Sterling sighed, rubbing his temples. "The digital signature on the leak points to a ghost entity operating through a decentralized military-grade network. It’s not a hacker group. It’s an intelligence apparatus. Who have you crossed lately, David?"

David opened his mouth to retort, but the image of Maya’s face—covered in pink frosting, looking up at him with those unreadable, dead-calm eyes—flashed violently through his mind. You're just a waitress, he had mocked her. You won't last a week.

The horrifying realization hit him like a physical blow. The quiet woman who cooked his meals, raised his daughter on weekends, and never complained about his endless cruelty wasn't an ordinary civilian. She was a ghost who had walked right into his trap just to map out the entire fortress from the inside.

"Maya," David whispered, the name catching in his dry throat.

Sterling looked up, confused. "What did you say? Maya? Your former partner? The waitress?"

"She's not a waitress," David said, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and disbelief. "She was never a waitress."

Deep in the pine forest safe house, Maya stood before the large display wall, watching the live security feed of the federal courthouse holding room. She saw the exact moment David figured it out—the sudden realization dawning on his face, the way his shoulders slumped as the terrifying truth settled into his bones.

Lily walked into the room, holding her stuffed rabbit, rubbing her sleepy eyes. "Mommy, are we still on the adventure?"

Maya immediately knelt down, her hard, tactical expression melting away instantly, replaced by the warm, gentle smile of a devoted mother. She smoothed down Lily’s hair and kissed her forehead.

"We're almost done, sweetie," Maya whispered softly. "Just a few more loose ends to tie up, and then we can go home."
