Chapter 12: Precision and Control

The confrontation in the hallway lasted less than three seconds. Viktor Vance never even had the opportunity to squeeze the trigger of his suppressed pistol. Thomas closed the distance with terrifying speed, sweeping Viktor’s legs out from under him and driving him hard against the hardwood floor. The heavy weapon clattered harmlessly away across the planks, skittering beneath the entryway table.

Two other operatives secured Viktor's arms behind his back with reinforced zip-ties, lifting him up effortlessly. Viktor grunted, his face pressed against the wall, his arrogance instantly replaced by a mixture of shock and sheer terror.

"Check his pockets and secure his comms," Thomas ordered in a low, authoritative military register, his eyes remaining cold and fixed on the intruder.

Maya walked slowly out of the kitchen, her steps measured and deliberate. She stopped a few feet away from Viktor, looking down at him with the same detached, clinical focus she had used when mapping out the financial vulnerabilities of Vance Financial from the inside.

"Who sent you?" Maya asked quietly.

"Go to hell," Viktor spat out, blood trickling from a minor scrape on his cheek. "You think you've won? There are others. The network doesn't end with me or David. You can't hide forever."

Maya offered a faint, chilling smile—not a smile of joy, but the expression of an auditor who had just found the final discrepancy in a fraudulent ledger.

"I'm not hiding, Viktor," Maya replied softly. "I'm hunting."

She nodded to Thomas, who signaled the operatives to move their prisoner toward the back exit where an unmarked transport vehicle waited in the shadows of the coastal pines. Viktor was dragged out into the cool night air, cursing and thrashing uselessly against his bonds until the sound of the engine faded away down the winding gravel road.

Silence returned to the white cottage, broken only by the rhythmic ticking of the kitchen clock and the distant sound of ocean waves crashing against the cliffs below. Maya stood alone in the hallway for a moment, taking a slow, measured breath. The lingering ghosts of her past life were finally being systematically erased, one by one.

She walked quietly up the wooden staircase, checking on Lily. Her daughter was sleeping soundly, completely untouched by the brief violence that had transpired downstairs. Maya gently pulled the blanket up over the little girl's shoulders, kissed her forehead, and whispered a soft reassurance.

"We're safe, sweetie," Maya whispered into the quiet room. "Mommy has everything under control."
