Chapter 10: Whispers of the Past

The ocean breeze carried a faint hint of salt and pine up to the front porch of the coastal cottage. Maya sat quietly in her rocking chair, watching the gentle rise and fall of the horizon. Though months had passed since the federal raid dismantled Vance Financial, the internal clock of a trained intelligence operative never truly stopped ticking. She knew that men like David rarely existed in a vacuum; corporate empires built on illegal foundations always maintained contingency networks—shadowy associates who might come looking for loose ends once the dust settled.

Thomas walked up the gravel path, holding a fresh cup of coffee and a secure tactical tablet. His face wore a rare expression of focused concern. He took a seat in the adjacent wooden chair, handing the tablet over to Maya without a word.

Maya’s eyes scanned the data stream instantly. The report detailed an encrypted communication ping originating from an offshore server in Zurich—a server directly linked to one of David's silent business partners, a man named Viktor Vance, David's estranged cousin who operated entirely outside the domestic legal framework.

"They're looking for the contingency vault," Thomas said softly, breaking the quiet morning calm. "David kept a secondary offline drive containing encrypted offshore communications. He didn't have it on him during the raid, and his legal team has been frantically searching his private residences for it."

Maya set the tablet down on the small wooden table beside her tea. Her expression remained entirely composed, a mask of absolute serenity. The humiliation of the birthday party on that suburban lawn felt distant, yet the tactical lessons burned brightly in her memory. You never leave a threat half-neutralized.

"Viktor thinks he can pick up where David left off," Maya murmured, her voice steady and deliberate. "He thinks our disappearance is a tactical retreat rather than a complete strategic victory."

"The local police in the nearby town received an anonymous tip about a suspicious vehicle parked near the perimeter road yesterday," Thomas added, leaning forward. "Our digital tripwires didn't trip, but the local chatter confirms that someone is asking questions about a woman matching your description who arrived here with a young child."

Maya stood up gracefully, smoothing the fabric of her yellow sundress. Down in the yard, Lily was humming happily as she braided dandelion flowers into the fur of the golden retriever puppy. The sight of her daughter’s innocence anchored Maya, fueling her resolve with a protective fire that could never be extinguished.

"Let them look," Maya said quietly, her dark eyes locking onto the tree line where the coastal road wound down toward the cliffs. "It’s time we remind them what happens when you underestimate a ghost."
