Chapter 9

The elevator ride to the top floor felt remarkably different this time. Instead of the crushing weight of impending unemployment, Clara felt a quiet, simmering uncertainty. The security guard rode with her in silence, his expression respectful and relaxed in a way it had never been while Eleanor was in charge. When the doors slid open, the quiet elegance of the executive hallway seemed welcoming rather than intimidating.

Mr. Davies gestured toward the open doors of the grand office. Clara stepped across the threshold, her canvas bag clutched tightly in one hand.

Margaret Sterling was still seated behind the massive mahogany desk. The white medical bandage on her hand was clean and bright against the dark wood. Gone was the worn green jacket she had worn downstairs; now, seated in the center of power, she radiated an undeniable aura of leadership and vision. To the side of the room, Eleanor was standing near the door, her burgundy blazer looking suddenly drab and unkempt, holding a cardboard box containing her personal desk items while two security guards waited to escort her out.

Eleanor shot Clara a look of pure, concentrated venom as Clara walked past. It was a look filled with bitter resentment, blaming the young employee for the complete collapse of her fifteen-year empire. Clara averted her eyes, feeling a pang of pity despite the hostility directed at her.

"Ah, Clara. Come in, please," Margaret said, her voice warm and inviting, cutting through the heavy tension in the room.

Clara walked further into the room, stopping a few feet away from the desk. "You asked for me, Mrs. Sterling?"

"I did," Margaret said, standing up from her chair with surprising grace. She walked around the desk and approached Clara, stopping just an arm's length away. She reached out with her uninjured hand and gently touched Clara’s shoulder. "I want to apologize for what happened in the lobby this morning. No employee of mine should ever be punished for showing basic human decency."

Clara blinked, caught entirely off guard by the billionaire's humility. "Thank you, ma'am. But... rules are rules, and I did disobey a direct order from my manager."

"Some rules deserve to be broken, especially when they blind us to our own humanity," Margaret said firmly. She turned her head toward the door, where Eleanor was standing rigidly with her box. "Eleanor learned that lesson today too late. But I am hoping this company can learn it moving forward."

May you like

Eleanor turned and stormed out of the office, her heels clicking angrily down the hallway, the security guards trailing closely behind her. The heavy oak doors swung shut, sealing away the last remnant of the old regime.

Margaret turned back to Clara, her eyes bright with a sharp, calculating intelligence. "Clara, how would you like to step into a new role?"
