Chapter 5

The hallway leading to the executive suite was lined with dark mahogany panels and thick Persian rugs that muffled the sound of footsteps. Eleanor walked with rapid, purposeful strides, her jaw set tight, her mind racing with a desperate cocktail of denial and strategic planning. She had spent fifteen years building her reputation as the most efficient hotel manager in the region. She refused to let it all crumble because of an eccentric billionaire playing games in the lobby.

Behind her, the security guards and a handful of trembling junior staff members hurried to keep pace, their boots clicking softly against the expensive flooring. No one dared to speak. The air in the corridor was thick with anticipation, heavy with the undeniable knowledge that a reckoning was taking place at the very top of the building.

Eleanor reached the heavy oak doors of the top-floor executive office. Normally locked tight and accessible only via biometric scanners or executive authorization, the doors stood slightly ajar, a sliver of warm light spilling out onto the dark carpet.

Slowly, deliberately, Eleanor raised her hand and pushed the door open.

Inside, the office was vast, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the sprawling skyline of the city. Behind the massive, polished mahogany desk sat Margaret Sterling. The elderly woman had removed her worn green jacket, revealing a neat beige blouse underneath. The white medical bandage on her hand was clearly visible as she rested her fingers calmly on the polished wood surface. She was looking directly ahead with an expression of absolute, unshakeable authority, reviewing a thick leather-bound dossier that had been waiting for her on the desk.

Eleanor stopped dead in the doorway.

Her breath caught in her throat. The sight of the billionaire sitting behind the desk that Eleanor herself had coveted and utilized as a symbol of her own power felt like a physical blow. Utter shock and profound disbelief warred inside Eleanor's chest, freezing her limbs in place.

Margaret slowly raised her eyes from the dossier. She did not look angry. Her gaze was calm, analytical, and entirely piercing as she locked eyes with the woman who had ordered her removal from her own lobby.

"Close the door behind you, Eleanor," Margaret said, her voice echoing softly in the cavernous office. "We have a great deal to discuss regarding your future with this company."

Eleanor’s heart hammered against her ribs, but years of corporate survival instinct kicked in, forcing her legs to move forward into the room, stepping across a threshold she knew she might never walk back out of.
