Chapter 8

The staff locker room in the basement of the hotel was quiet, lit by harsh fluorescent tubes that hummed softly overhead. Clara stood in front of her small metal locker, her hands moving mechanically as she packed her few personal items into a canvas tote bag. She took down her spare pair of flats, a framed photograph of her younger sister, and her employee ID badge, placing them inside with careful precision.

The weight of the suspension hung heavily on her shoulders. She had loved working at the front desk, interacting with guests from all over the world, listening to their stories, and making them feel welcome. To have it all snatched away because she chose to help an injured human being felt profoundly unfair. Yet, as she looked at her reflection in the small mirror taped inside her locker door, she knew she wouldn't have done a single thing differently. If the hotel required her to walk past someone in pain, then it wasn't a place she belonged anyway.

A soft knock echoed against the open metal door of her locker. Clara turned around and saw a middle-aged human resources executive standing in the doorway, looking unusually flustered. Behind him stood the lead security guard who had been present in the lobby earlier that morning.

"Clara?" the HR director asked, clearing his throat awkwardly.

"I'm clearing out my locker, Mr. Davies," Clara said quietly, holding up her canvas bag. "You don't need to worry about security escorting me. I know the rules."

"Actually, Clara, that's... that's not why we're down here," Mr. Davies said, running a hand nervously over his thinning hair. He exchanged a brief, uneasy glance with the security guard before stepping closer. "Mrs. Sterling has requested your presence in the top-floor executive office immediately."

Clara froze, her fingers tightening around the strap of her bag. "Mrs. Sterling? You mean... the elderly woman from the lobby?"

"The principal owner of the entire corporation," the security guard corrected gently, offering her a sympathetic nod. "And she specifically asked for you by name."

A knot of anxiety formed in Clara's stomach. Was she about to be fired permanently? Was management planning to hold her accountable for creating a scene and disobeying a direct order from the general manager? She had already accepted her suspension, but the thought of facing the billionaire owner after everything that had happened felt overwhelming.

"I have already been suspended by Ms. Vance," Clara said, trying to keep her voice steady. "There's nothing more I need to explain."

"Trust me, Clara, the situation upstairs has changed dramatically," Mr. Davies said, gesturing toward the elevator bank. "Ms. Vance is no longer with the company. Mrs. Sterling is waiting for you, and she made it very clear that she wants to speak with you personally."

Clara stared at the HR director, processing the staggering news. Eleanor was gone? Fired by the reclusive billionaire over an incident in the lobby? With a mixture of apprehension and reluctant curiosity, Clara zipped her canvas bag, took a deep breath, and nodded.

"Lead the way," she said.
