Chapter 5

Dominic stepped closer to Clara, his dark suit brushing against the wet stone of the balcony floor. He reached out with gloved hands, gently wrapping his fingers around the maid's bare arm just above her raw, rope-burned wrists. Clara flinched at the sudden contact, expecting a blow or a tightening of her bonds, but his grip was surprisingly steady and grounding. He looked down at her with a heavy, sorrowful gaze that completely dismantled the cold persona he usually wore like armor. Deep emotional tension filled the space between them, thick enough to suffocate the howling wind. Eleanor watched in stunned silence, her mouth opening to protest, but no words came out. Dominic leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a low, firm register that only Clara could fully absorb. "I already know," Dominic said softly. Clara stopped struggling, her tear-filled eyes widening in sheer confusion as the words settled over her. Eleanor took a sharp step forward, her composure finally cracking as genuine panic colored her voice. "What do you mean, Dominic? What are you saying?" she demanded, her hands flying to her chest. Dominic turned his head slightly to look at his wife, his expression hardening into something cold and terrifying. He released Clara's arm and stepped back into the center of the balcony, leaving the maid hanging in the damp chill. "I mean, Eleanor, that the game is over," Dominic said, his voice echoing clearly against the stone walls. "I've known about the embezzlement for months. I watched you frame this innocent girl to cover your tracks." Eleanor staggered back, hitting the glass french doors with a dull thud, the beige satin robe offering no warmth against the sudden chill in her veins. Clara let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, her head dropping back against the rough hemp rope as the adrenaline finally began to drain from her system. The storm overhead seemed to pause, holding its breath as the true power dynamic of Marshall Manor revealed itself in the lightning flash. Dominic stood tall in the center of the terrace, no longer a spectator, but the architect of the reckoning that was about to consume them all.
