Chapter 4

Clara lifted her head, her face pale and streaked with a mixture of rain and genuine tears. The illusion of stoicism shattered completely as she looked directly at Dominic, her eyes wide with a desperate, frantic pleading. She twisted her body slightly, ignoring the searing pain in her bound wrists as the ropes groaned under her weight. "Don't listen to her!" Clara cried out, her voice cracking with raw emotion that pierced through the sound of the storm. Eleanor recoiled slightly, her lip curling in disgust at the display of weakness and defiance. "She's lying to save her skin, Mr. Marshall. Look at her. A thief caught in the act," Eleanor hissed, stepping back into her defensive posture. But Dominic remained still, his gaze locked onto Clara’s tearful eyes. There was no theatricality in the girl's terror; it was the raw, unadorned panic of someone staring into an abyss. Clara swallowed hard, trying to steady her breathing as the cold wind whipped her hair across her face. "She's framing me, sir. I found the documents in her private desk. The offshore transfers. I was going to bring them to you tomorrow," Clara rushed out the words, her breath hitching between sentences as the weight of the accusation hung heavily in the air. Eleanor’s face drained of color for a split second before she recovered, her eyes flashing with renewed fury. "Absurd. Utterly absurd. The girl is unhinged," Eleanor snapped, though her voice lacked its previous absolute conviction. Dominic did not react immediately. He processed the claim with chilling detachment, weighing the logistics of what Clara had just confessed. Offshore transfers. That specific detail struck a nerve, aligning too closely with discrepancies he had noticed in the corporate accounts weeks ago. He glanced sideways at Eleanor, noting the subtle tension in her jaw and the way her fingers clutched the beige satin robe a fraction tighter. The air between the three of them grew heavier, charged with a mutual realization that the fragile peace of Marshall Manor had irrevocably fractured. Clara hung suspended between them, her chest heaving as she waited for the axe to fall, her fate resting entirely in the hands of the man who had built his entire life on deception.
