Chapter 14

The first pale streaks of gray dawn began to filter through the east-facing windows of Marshall Manor, cutting through the lingering shadows of the stormy night and bringing a quiet, cleansing light to the fractured household. Eleanor had already been removed from the premises, handed over to local law enforcement officers who waited quietly at the front gates with flashing cruisers to take her away to custody. The heavy silence of the morning hung heavily in the grand foyer as Dominic stood near the main staircase, buttoning his cuffs and looking thoroughly exhausted yet profoundly at peace. Clara walked down the steps, having changed out of her damp maid's uniform into a clean, simple civilian blouse and trousers, her wrists lightly bandaged under loose linen sleeves. Dominic looked up as she approached, offering a tired, genuine smile that transformed his usually severe features. "How are your wrists holding up, Clara?" he asked softly, stepping forward to meet her at the base of the staircase. Clara managed a small, reassuring smile, holding her arms up slightly to show the improvement. "They're healing, sir. The ointment the doctor gave me is already working wonders," she replied, her voice steady and warm. Dominic nodded, reaching into his pocket to retrieve a formal document bearing the official seal of the Marshall estate's legal counsel. "I've spoken with Sarah this morning. We both agree that the household needs a fresh start, and leadership requires someone with unshakeable integrity," Dominic said, extending the document toward her. Clara looked down at the paper, her eyes widening as she read the heading designating her as the new Chief Administrator of Marshall Manor, with a salary and autonomy that would completely change her life. "Mr. Marshall... I don't know what to say. This is... incredible," Clara breathed, looking up at him with profound gratitude. "You earned every bit of it, Clara. You saved my family from complete ruin when everyone else chose to look away," Dominic said firmly, placing the contract gently into her hands. The storm had finally passed, washing away the rot that had festered within the mansion's walls for years, leaving behind a foundation strong enough to rebuild upon as the morning sun broke fully over the wet stone terraces.
