Chapter 2

Dominic stepped further onto the balcony, his leather shoes clicking softly against the wet slate tiles. He ignored the driving rain that sprayed against his tailored dark suit, keeping his posture rigid and his hands casually tucked into his trouser pockets. He looked at Clara first, noting the raw redness around her wrists where the thick hemp bit into her skin. Then, he turned his cold, calculating gaze toward Eleanor, who stood with her chin tilted upward in defiance. The silence between them stretched for several agonizing seconds, punctuated only by the rhythmic drumming of the storm. Dominic exhaled a slow, quiet breath, watching the vapor curl into the chilly night air before speaking. "Is that so?" he asked calmly, his voice lacking any immediate anger or surprise. It was the tone of a man who viewed human drama merely as an inconvenience to be managed. Eleanor bristled slightly at his indifference, her hands tightening into pale fists within the folds of her beige satin robe. She had expected shock, outrage, or at least a demand for immediate explanations, not this chilling composure. "You have no idea what she's been doing behind our backs, Dominic," Eleanor replied, her voice dropping an octave as she sought to match his chilling calm. Clara let out a faint, shuddering breath, her brown eyes darting desperately between the husband and wife. She tried to pull her hands away from the overhead anchor, but the knots held fast, biting deeper into her flesh. Dominic did not rush. He took his time assessing the situation, his analytical mind processing every micro-expression on the women's faces. He knew this household, every secret nook and cranny, every hidden debt and illicit affair that bled the Marshall estate dry. Yet, seeing Clara bound like a common criminal on his own terrace brought a strange, dark shadow across his eyes. He walked slowly in a half-circle around the hanging girl, his dark suit absorbing the meager light from the open french doors. Eleanor tracked his movements anxiously, her blonde hair catching the amber glow spilling from the study. She needed him on her side, needed him to accept her version of reality before the night grew any older and the foundations began to crack. Dominic stopped just inches from Clara, looking up at the ropes with a detached curiosity that seemed crueler than any outburst of temper could ever be.
