Chapter 6 - Into the Abyss

The glass paperweight shattered the single overhead bulb with a loud, ringing pop, plunging the archive room into absolute, suffocating darkness. Instantly, a deafening roar echoed through the enclosed space as Julian's revolver discharged blindly into the empty air, the muzzle flash illuminating the room in a blinding, instantaneous strobe of orange fire. The bullet embedded itself deeply into the wooden paneling behind Clara, showering her with a cloud of dry, choking sawdust.
"Get the emergency lights!" Elena's voice shrieked from the doorway, echoing frantically against the concrete walls. "Don't let her reach the window!"
Clara didn't hesitate. Operating entirely on instinct and memory, she lunged forward in the pitch black, her hands sweeping across the metal examination table until they connected with the heavy leather briefcase Elena had left behind. Grasping the handle, she used the momentum of her sprint to hurl herself toward where she remembered the high, narrow window being located. Her shoulder collided heavily with the glass pane, shattering it into a thousand glittering shards that rained down into the dark abyss outside.
A harsh click echoed near the doorway as the backup generator kicked in, flooding the archive room with a harsh, glaring white LED light. Julian stood by the switch, his face twisted in a rare display of genuine rage, the silver revolver gripped tightly in his trembling hand. But the room was empty. The shattered window frame rattled in the fierce coastal wind, and the sound of crashing waves echoed faintly from far down the cliffside.
Julian rushed to the window, peering out into the swirling fog and darkness, his chest heaving with exertion. Elena hurried up behind him, her face pale with disbelief as she looked down at the empty drop.
"Is she... did she jump?" Elena asked, her voice losing its previous composure, trembling slightly as she gripped the wooden windowsill.
"She jumped," Julian muttered, his jaw clenching so hard muscles ticked in his cheek. He lowered the gun slowly, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the rocky shoreline visible through the mist. "Or she plummeted to her death trying to escape. Either way, the body will wash out to sea within the hour. The tide is coming in hard."
Elena let out a long, shuddering breath, smoothing down her dark blazer with shaking hands. "Make the call to local authorities. File the report. Tell them our deranged wife and daughter-in-law broke into the private archive, threatened us with a weapon, and leaped out the window in a fit of psychotic panic."

Julian nodded slowly, turning away from the window with a calculating glint back in his eyes. He reached into his pocket to retrieve his phone, but as he pulled his hand out, his expression froze. The master key—the very key Clara had stolen from the dining table—was gone, having been snatched off the desk in the darkness before she made her desperate leap.
