Chapter 11 - Crossfire at Dawn

The harsh metallic click of Julian's pistol cocking echoed sharply through the quiet diner, cutting off any response Clara was about to give. Julian stood panting in the doorway, his eyes wild and bloodshot, the pristine white dress shirt now rumpled and stained with dark streaks of mud from combing the cliffside trails. He looked less like a calculated corporate strategist and more like a desperate animal pushed into a corner.
"Marcus," Julian hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of furious betrayal and adrenaline. "I should have known you were the rat leaking our financial audits to the federal regulators."
Marcus didn't even flinch. He remained completely relaxed in the booth, slowly closing his silver cigarette case and sliding it back into his trench coat pocket. He glanced casually at the gun barrel pointing at his temple before lifting his gaze to meet his brother's furious eyes.
"Put the gun down, Julian," Marcus said smoothly, his tone dripping with patronizing amusement. "You're embarrassing yourself. Waving a firearm around a public diner at seven in the morning is a wonderful way to guarantee the state police arrive before your private security team can clean up the mess."
"Shut your mouth!" Julian screamed, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. He shifted his aim fractionally, locking his cold, murderous gaze directly onto Clara. "And you... you ungrateful little parasite. I should have broken your neck before you ever set foot in my archive."
Clara didn't flinch. She kept her hand firmly inside the leather briefcase, her fingers brushing against the cold metal of a concealed panic button Marcus had quietly slid across the table beneath the papers moments before he walked in.
"Go ahead, Julian," Clara said, her voice steady and chillingly calm, surprising even herself. "Shoot me right here in front of the waitress, the cook, and half the town. Let's see how fast your offshore accounts protect you when the local media broadcasts a live murder trial."
Julian hesitated, his breath hitching as reality momentarily pierced through his blind rage. Sirens wailed faintly in the distance, growing louder by the second, signaling that someone from the diner had already called the local sheriff's department.
Marcus smiled coldly, capitalizing on his brother's hesitation. "The federal marshals are already en route with a search warrant for the estate, Julian. Mother is packing her bags as we speak, but she won't make it past the front gates. It's over."

Julian's face drained of all color. He lowered the pistol by a fraction of an inch, his eyes darting frantically between Marcus and Clara. But as the flashing red and blue lights of police cruisers painted the diner windows in streaks of crimson and azure, Julian suddenly lunged across the counter, grabbing the middle-aged waitress by the arm and pressing the cold barrel of the gun against her temple, using her as a human shield to secure his escape.
