Chapter 10 - An Unholy Alliance

Clara stared across the small laminate table at Marcus Vance, her eyes narrowed with fierce skepticism. The harsh diner lighting cast deep shadows across his sharp jawline, mirroring the dangerous calculation dancing in his eyes.
"You want to lock them away?" Clara echoed, her voice laced with sharp disbelief. "Julian is your brother, and Elena is your mother. You share the exact same corrupted bloodline, Marcus. Why on earth would you help me destroy them?"
Marcus leaned back against the vinyl upholstery, crossing one leg over the other with practiced ease. He reached inside his dark trench coat and pulled out a silver cigarette case, though he didn't light it, merely turning it over between his long fingers.
"Family loyalty in the Vance household is nothing more than a transactional agreement, Clara," Marcus replied smoothly, his tone laced with venomous nostalgia. "Julian and Mother managed to cut me out of the primary shipping conglomerate five years ago, leaving me with a fraction of our father's estate. They thought they could run the syndicate alone, laundering money through offshore shell corporations without my oversight. But they're sloppy. And now, thanks to your little midnight stroll through the archive, I have proof of their illegal operations."
"And what makes you think I'll hand over the briefcase to you?" Clara challenged, her fingers curling protectively over the leather straps of the bag. "What's stopping you from taking it by force and disposing of me just like they planned?"
Marcus offered a slow, cold smile, tilting his head slightly. "If I wanted you dead, Clara, you would have been found at the bottom of that cliff hours ago. My men tracked your signal from the briefcase's internal GPS tracker the moment you left the property. I could have intercepted you on the highway before you even reached this diner. Instead, I walked in here alone to offer you a partnership."
Clara remained silent, weighing his words against the stark reality of her situation. She was legally dead, hunted by her husband and mother-in-law, and completely lacking resources. Fighting the Vance empire alone was a slow suicide. But allying with Marcus Vance felt dangerously like making a pact with the devil.
"What kind of partnership?" Clara asked cautiously.
"You want justice, and public exposure of their crimes," Marcus said, leaning forward again, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "I want complete control of the family empire and their personal assets frozen by federal authorities. We use your inside knowledge of the household routines and my legal access to the federal prosecutors to execute a synchronized raid on the estate. Once Julian and Elena are behind bars, I give you a new identity, safe passage out of the country, and five million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds."
Clara studied his face, searching for any flicker of deceit. She knew he was using her just as much as Julian had, but the alignment of their mutual destruction was undeniable.

Before Clara could give her answer, the diner's front door burst open with a loud crash. Julian stood in the doorway, his white dress shirt stained with mud and his hair wild, holding a heavy pistol pointed directly at Marcus's head.
