Chapter 3: The Safehouse

They arrived at a small, isolated cabin owned by Jack’s late uncle deep in the pine woods of Oregon. The floorboards creaked underfoot, but the stove crackled with dry birch wood, filling the space with genuine warmth.
Jack prepared a warm bowl of soup, setting it gently in front of Lily at the wooden kitchen table. For ten minutes, she just stared at it, her fingers twitching near her lap.
""It's okay, Lily,"" Jack said softly, kneeling down so he was eye-level with her. ""You can eat whenever you're ready.""
""Grandma said... eating before completing the silence cycle is a weakness,"" she whispered, her eyes wide with lingering terror.

Tears pricked Jack's eyes, but he held them back. He took her small, cold hands in his. ""Grandma was wrong. Food is love, Lily. Eating when you're hungry is natural. You don't have to earn the right to exist here.""
Slowly, timidly, Lily picked up the spoon. As she took her first bite, a quiet sob escaped her lips—the first crack in the emotional stone Eleanor had built around her.
