Chapter 8: Morning Interrogation

The stark interview room at the federal holding facility smelled of stale coffee, industrial cleaner, and quiet despair. The walls were painted a dull, institutional gray, featuring a large two-way mirror on one side. Julian Vance sat at the bolted metal table, wearing an orange jumpsuit that clashed violently with his dark, slicked-back hair. His wrists were cuffed to a metal loop in the center of the table. He looked up as the heavy steel door creaked open, revealing Arthur Sterling stepping into the room carrying a thick manila folder.

Arthur pulled out a metal chair across from Julian and sat down deliberately, placing the folder squarely in front of him. He did not speak immediately, letting the suffocating silence press down upon his former son-in-law. Julian’s jaw twitched, his intense expression hardening into a defiant glare. "If you're here to gloat, Arthur, save your breath. I want my legal counsel present before I answer any questions regarding corporate structures," Julian said coldly, his voice retaining a thin veneer of arrogance.

"This is not a formal deposition, Julian. This is a courtesy conversation between two men who understand exactly what is coming," Arthur replied evenly, opening the manila folder to reveal bank transfer receipts and signed shell-company incorporation papers. "Your defense attorneys can posture all they want in front of the magistrate, but these documents trace every stolen dollar directly from public municipal contracts into your private Swiss portfolios. The case is airtight." Julian sneered, leaning forward as much as the handcuffs allowed. "You think you won everything, don't you? You think Elena is safe now. But she was knee-deep in the corporate filings for three years, Arthur. If I go down for fraud and embezzlement, her signature is on dozens of those board resolutions."

Arthur’s face remained an unreadable mask, though his eyes flashed with cold fury. "Elena was coerced, manipulated, and trapped by your psychological abuse and threats of isolation, Julian. We have medical records, psychological evaluations, and the audio recording from last night where you threatened her physical safety while she was calling my office. Her legal team will secure full immunity as a cooperative witness against your criminal enterprise." Julian’s smug expression faltered for a fraction of a second, the reality of his complete isolation finally sinking into his bones.

"She always was weak, hiding behind her father's coattails," Julian muttered under his breath, venom dripping from every syllable. Arthur closed the manila folder with a sharp snap that echoed loudly in the small room. He stood up slowly, looking down at the man who had terrorized his daughter for five agonizing years. "Elena is stronger than you could ever comprehend, Julian. You broke plates and shattered glass because you were terrified of her inner strength. Enjoy your new home. You've earned every single day of it."

Without waiting for a reply, Arthur turned his back on Julian and walked toward the heavy steel door. As he knocked twice for the guard to let him out, Julian let out a sudden, pathetic laugh that lacked any true humor. "She'll never escape the Vance name, Arthur! It's in her blood now!" Arthur ignored the outburst entirely, stepping out into the bright hallway and letting the heavy steel door slam shut behind him, sealing Julian in the darkness he had created.
