Chapter 12: The Courthouse Steps

The imposing granite steps of the federal courthouse were a swirling sea of reporters, flashing camera bulbs, and microphone booms as the morning sun broke through the gray urban clouds. Elena stepped out of the black sedan, flanked by her father Arthur Sterling on her left and a federal security detail clearing a path through the aggressive press corps. She wore a tailored charcoal-gray wool coat over a simple black turtleneck, her hair tied back in a neat, sleek bun. Her expression was calm, composed, and completely resolute.

Camera shutters clicked furiously, capturing every micro-expression as she walked steadily up the stone steps. "Mrs. Vance! Is it true your husband threatened you with physical violence before your father intervened?" shouted a journalist from the front row of the barricades. Elena did not break her stride or acknowledge the intrusive question. She kept her chin up, looking straight ahead toward the massive mahogany doors of the courthouse entrance. The stark contrast between the terrified woman cowering in the dining room weeks ago and the poised individual walking up these steps today was unmistakable.

Inside the holding transport parked in the underground sally port, Julian Vance was escorted out by two federal marshals. He wore a crisp dark suit provided by his legal team for the court appearance, his dark slicked-back hair neatly combed. Despite his polished exterior, his face was tense, and his eyes darted nervously around the secure corridor. He knew the odds were insurmountable, but his pride refused to let him surrender quietly. As he was led toward the courtroom elevator, he adjusted his tie with a sharp, rigid tug.

The federal courtroom was packed to capacity, the oak benches filled with journalists, legal analysts, and members of the public eager to witness the downfall of a prominent corporate dynasty. When Julian entered through the side doors, his eyes scanned the gallery instantly, locking onto Elena seated at the prosecution's witness preparation table beside her father. Julian’s jaw tightened into a hard line, but Elena did not flinch or look away. She met his intense gaze with a quiet, unflinching strength that rattled him far more than any shouted threat could ever have done.

The bailiff’s voice boomed across the wood-paneled room, commanding everyone to rise. "All rise for the Honorable Judge Catherine Vance—no relation to the defendant," the bailiff corrected smoothly with a slight smirk. Judge Vance, a stern jurist with silver hair and sharp spectacles, took her seat behind the elevated mahogany bench. She surveyed the courtroom with a critical eye, tapping her gavel once to settle the murmurs in the gallery. "Please be seated. We are here for Case Number 48-B: The United States versus Julian Vance. Opening statements may begin."
