Chapter 9: The Digital Siege

The study plunged into partial darkness as the local power grid was forcibly severed by an external script. The only illumination came from the flickering emergency LED strip along the baseboards and the pale amber glow of the computer monitor, which was now battling a high-level intrusion protocol.
"They've locked the exterior doors," Julian shouted, rushing to the study window and trying to force the heavy acoustic glass. "The smart-lock system is overridden. We're trapped inside the suite."
"Stop panicking and help me finish the upload," Eleanor commanded, her voice cutting through his hysteria. She was typing furiously using battery backup power, her fingers executing a complex cryptographic sequence Marcus had taught her years ago during a family tech seminar.
"You don't understand, Eleanor!" Julian turned from the window, his face pale with dread. "When The Architect cuts the network, they don't just lock doors. They wipe local drives. If that upload doesn't finish in the next thirty seconds, everything Marcus found—and everything we are—gets erased forever."
Eleanor watched the progress bar inch forward: ninety-eight percent. Ninety-nine percent.
A high-pitched alarm began to chirp from the server rack in the corner of the room. The cooling fans shrieked as they overclocked to combat an incoming thermal deletion attack. Smoke began to curl faintly from the primary routing box.
"Come on," Eleanor whispered, her eyes burning with tears of exhaustion and adrenaline. "Come on..."
Upload complete. Packet delivered to destination: Federal Bureau of Investigation - Financial Crimes Unit.
The screen flashed a brilliant, blinding green for one second before going entirely black. The cooling fans spun down with a dying whine, and the office fell completely silent, save for the distant sound of rain beginning to lash against the penthouse windows.
Julian stood frozen in the center of the room, his chest heaving. "Did it go through?"
"It went through," Eleanor said, leaning back in her chair and letting out a long, shuddering breath. Her blue pantsuit was damp with sweat, her hair completely unraveled from its bun, but for the first time in years, she felt light.
Before Julian could answer, the heavy double doors of the penthouse suite echoed with a loud, rhythmic thud. Someone was using a tactical breaching charge on the outer frame.
"They're here," Julian whispered, terror paralyzing his limbs.

Eleanor stood up from the desk, smoothing her jacket with steady hands. "Good. Let them in."
