Chapter 2: Shadows in the Ballroom

Julian’s question hung in the charged air of the Grand Meridian ballroom like a physical threat. Eleanor did not answer immediately. She kept the phone pressed against her ear, though the line had already gone dead, replaced by a monotonous dial tone that buzzed like an angry hornet. Her gaze locked onto her husband’s face, searching for a micro-expression, a twitch of the eye, a tightening of the jaw that might betray complicity. Julian had built his financial empire on corporate restructuring and aggressive acquisitions, but tonight, his stillness felt less like business acumen and more like premeditation.

"I don't know," Eleanor whispered, her voice raw. She pulled Lily closer, shielding the child’s eyes from the sea of staring faces. "Someone handed her this phone. Someone who knew we would be standing right here under the south chandelier at exactly eight-fifteen."

"That's impossible," Julian said, though his eyes flicked toward the security balcony above them. "The guest list was vetted. Every person in this room has clearance."

"Clearance doesn't stop blackmail, Julian," Eleanor retorted, standing up while keeping one arm firmly around Lily’s waist. She slipped the smartphone into her pantsuit pocket, feeling its hard, rectangular edge press against her thigh like a loaded weapon. "Someone wanted us to see this. Someone wants us to know they can reach our daughter whenever they choose."

The ballroom guests were beginning to murmur, the delicate social fabric of the evening tearing at the seams. Whispers rippled through the crowd like wind through dry grass. Eleanor knew they had minutes before the media caught wind of the disturbance. In their world, scandal was a fatal disease, and the vultures were already circling.

Julian stepped closer, lowering his voice so only Eleanor could hear. "You shouldn't have panicked. Running across the floor like that... it makes us look weak. Whatever this is, we handle it in private."

"Private?" Eleanor stared at him in disbelief. "They used our daughter to send a message, and you're worried about the stock price on Monday?"

"I'm worried about survival, Eleanor," Julian replied sharply, his jaw tightening just enough for her to catch the shift. "You have no idea what kind of people we're dealing with."

"Oh, I think I'm starting to get a very clear picture," she said, her eyes narrowing.

Without waiting for his response, Eleanor scooped Lily up into her arms, ignoring the protest of her tired muscles. She walked past the sea of tuxedoes and silk gowns, refusing to look back. Julian watched her go, his hand sliding slowly into his jacket pocket, his fingers curling around an identical black smartphone.
