Chapter 7: The Descent into the Vault

Eleanor rode the private elevator back down to the penthouse with her mind racing. The thirty-million-dollar trust was her only real leverage, but handing it over to the cartel would mean funding their operations indefinitely. She refused to be complicit any longer. When the elevator doors opened, Julian was pacing the length of the living room, a fresh glass of scotch in his hand, his tuxedo jacket discarded on a chair.

"Where have you been?" Julian demanded, stopping in his tracks as she walked in. "Did you meet them? What did they want?"

"They want the independent trust," Eleanor said evenly, walking past him toward her private study. "Thirty million. They want it transferred by dawn, or they drop the federal indictments on us both and throw me to the wolves."

Julian swallowed hard, running a hand through his thinning hair. "We have to do it, Eleanor. It's the only way out. We liquidate the accounts, take whatever cash we can access, and catch a private flight to South America before morning."

"Run?" Eleanor stopped at the doorway of her study and turned to look at him with deep disgust. "Is that your master plan? After everything you've built, you're ready to live like a fugitive?"

"It's better than rotting in a federal prison!" Julian shouted, his composure finally shattering. "You don't understand how deep this goes, Eleanor! The people backing this cartel aren't just businessmen; they're judges, intelligence directors, politicians! We can't fight them!"

"Marcus tried to fight them," Eleanor said quietly.

Julian froze. "What did you say?"

"Marcus is alive," Eleanor said, watching her husband's reaction closely. "He's in a federal holding facility. He didn't flee to Zurich. He tried to do the right thing, and your bosses buried him."

Julian sank slowly onto the edge of the sofa, the scotch glass trembling in his hand. The color drained entirely from his face. "How do you know that?"

"The woman on the roof told me," Eleanor replied, stepping into her study and turning on the desk lamp. "And she told me something else. She said you already gave them your override codes."

Julian didn't look up. He stared down into his amber drink as if searching for an excuse at the bottom of the glass. "I had no choice, Eleanor. They threatened my life."

"No, Julian," Eleanor said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "You threatened our family the moment you signed your first corrupt contract. But I am going to finish this on my own terms."

She sat down at her mahogany desk, opened a hidden wall panel, and pulled out a heavy, offline titanium drive—the cold-storage backup containing every financial record Marcus Vance had managed to smuggle out before his arrest.
