Chapter 10: The Breach

The heavy wooden doors of the penthouse suite blew inward with a deafening crash, splintering mahogany and scattering drywall dust across the polished foyer floor. Three figures in tactical black gear, their faces obscured by reinforced composite helmets and night-vision optics, poured into the suite with military precision. They moved with terrifying efficiency, sweeping corners, their weapons trained straight ahead.

Eleanor stepped out of the study into the hallway, standing tall despite her exhaustion. Julian cowered slightly behind her, his hands trembling at his sides.

"Stay back," the lead tactical operative commanded through a distorted voice modulator. "Hands where we can see them. Now."

"You're a little late," Eleanor said, her voice shockingly calm against the backdrop of destruction. "The transfer finished three minutes ago. The federal server has every file, every offshore account, and every name associated with the cartel."

The operative lowered his weapon slightly, tapping his helmet communications piece. "Command, this is Team One. The target has secured the local terminal. Confirming data exfiltration."

A pause stretched across the comm-link before a sharp, synthetic voice crackled through the operative's speaker. Abort extraction. Secure the targets and eliminate local hardware.

Eleanor didn't flinch. She had anticipated this exact command. "Before you smash my computer, you might want to check your own secure channels," she said coolly. "The moment that data hit the federal server, it triggered an automated distribution protocol to every major investigative news outlet in North America. If anything happens to me, my husband, or my daughter, the story breaks by sunrise."

The operative stared at her through his tinted visor, processing the tactical reality of the situation. Killing them now wouldn't erase the data; it would only turn them into martyrs and ensure the immediate destruction of the cartel's global infrastructure.

Suddenly, a soft chime echoed from down the hallway.

From Lily’s bedroom, the door creaked open. The six-year-old stood in the doorway, rubbing her eyes in her light pink party dress, looking bewildered by the noise and the shattered wood littering the floor.

"Mommy?" Lily whispered, her voice small and frightened.

Eleanor’s composure nearly cracked at the sound of her daughter's voice. She pushed past the tactical operative, ignoring the raised weapon, and knelt down in front of Lily, sweeping the child into her arms once more.

"I'm right here, sweetheart," Eleanor murmured, kissing the top of her head. "Everything is going to be alright. I promise."
