Chapter 3 - The Hand on the Wood

A figure materialized beside the bench with the sudden, quiet gravity of a photograph developing in a chemical bath. An older man with thick grey hair and a neatly trimmed beard, wearing his familiar brown jacket and worn tan pants, lowered himself onto the slatted wood with a soft, familiar sigh. It was the exact posture Elena had memorized during the final agonizing months of her father’s life—the stiff left knee, the cautious distribution of weight, the way his broad shoulders slumped in relief whenever he finally sat down after a long walk.

Clara stepped behind him, her small hands moving with practiced tenderness to massage his tired shoulders, a gentle, glowing smile spreading across her face.

Elena gasped, staggering backward until her spine hit the kitchen counter. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her father had died in the master bedroom upstairs. She had signed the death certificate. She had watched the cemetery workers lower the polished mahogany casket into the damp earth. Yet there he sat, reaching out with gnarled fingers to pick up the small food container Clara had brought him.

"Dad?" Elena whispered into the empty kitchen, the word tasting like ash.

Outside, the man in the brown jacket popped the container open, inhaling the sweet steam of the apples with a faint nod of approval. He turned his head slightly, whispering something over his shoulder to Clara. The girl laughed, a bright, clear sound that somehow traveled straight through the glass and echoed inside the silent house.

Elena reached for the patio handle, her hand trembling violently. She pulled the door open just a fraction, the cold air rushing in to bite her cheeks.

And then, the old man slowly turned his face toward the house, fixing his dark, piercing eyes directly on Elena.
