Chapter 10 - The Ledger of Secrets

Inside the dark cavity beneath the floorboards sat a small, dust-covered leather-bound book wrapped in oilskin, alongside a heavy brass key that Elena instantly recognized. It was the key to the iron lockbox her father always kept tucked away in the back of the local bank vault—a vault she had been told was emptied years ago.
Elena dropped to her knees beside her daughter, her trembling hands reaching out to lift the ledger from its hiding place. The leather was cold and damp, embossed with gold lettering that had faded into illegibility.
"Mom, look," Clara pointed to the open cavity where the ledger had rested.
Tucked beneath the oilskin wrapping was a folded sheet of heavy stationery, covered in her father’s spidery, unmistakable handwriting. Elena unfolded the paper, her eyes scanning the ink in the dim light of the study lamp.
Elena, if you are reading this, Miller’s people finally pushed past the fence. They aren't government auditors. They are the liquidation team for the syndicate I spent twenty years investigating as a quiet consultant for the state attorney general. The timberland isn't real estate; it's the drop site for every transaction they used to launder money through this county. The ledger contains every name, every account number, and every bribe paid to local officials—including the judge who signed off on my death certificate.
Elena’s breath caught in her throat. The room seemed to tilt sideways. Her father hadn't died of a heart attack. He had faked his own death with the help of federal protection, only to realize the syndicate had compromised the very agency meant to keep him safe.

A sharp, metallic clink echoed from the front of the house, followed by the heavy creak of the front door hinges opening.
