Chapter 11 - The Front Door Opens

"They're inside," Elena whispered, her blood running cold as she pulled Clara tightly against her chest.
Footsteps echoed softly in the foyer—measured, heavy, and multiple. Miller and at least one other man had bypassed the back patio door and forced the front deadbolt, entering the house without hesitation.
"Elena, bring the ledger out here and we can avoid any unpleasantness," Miller’s voice called out from the hallway, smooth and carrying a chilling casualness that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. "You can't run, and you certainly can't hide in a house this small. Let's not make your daughter watch something she'll need therapy for the rest of her life to forget."
Elena looked around the study in a panic. The window led directly out to the front porch where a second operative was likely stationed to cut off any escape. There was no back exit from this room, only the main hallway where Miller was currently waiting.
"Mom," Clara whispered calmly, tugging gently on Elena’s sleeve. She pointed toward the large mahogany bookshelf against the far wall—the one her grandfather had built by hand when Elena was just a child. "Grandpa said the panel slides if you press the third book from the left."
Elena stared at her daughter, utterly stunned. "What did you say?"
"He told me yesterday," Clara said simply, her eyes wide and completely devoid of fear. "He said if the bad men ever came back through the front door, we should take the old service stair behind the shelves down into the root cellar."

Without waiting for confirmation, Clara reached up and pressed her small palm against a worn copy of The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire. With a heavy, muffled click, the entire bookshelf glided smoothly inward on hidden iron hinges, revealing a dark, narrow staircase descending into pitch blackness.
