Chapter 14 - Breaking the Surface

A deafening crash echoed from the ceiling above as the hidden bookshelf was forcibly ripped off its hinges by Miller and his men. Heavy boots began stomping across the study floorboards, searching for the entrance to the stairs.

"Dad, hurry!" Elena urged, grabbing Clara's hand as her father heaved upward on the heavy iron latch of the cellar storm doors.

The rusted metal groaned in protest before bursting open with a loud clatter, flooding the dark root cellar with blinding afternoon sunlight and the crisp, clean air of the autumn yard.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!" a booming voice echoed from the front driveway, followed by the frantic shouting of multiple officers and the distinct click-clack of drawn service weapons.

Elena shielded her eyes against the sudden glare, stepping out into the yard with Clara clutched safely beside her. Standing near the patio were three unmarked black SUVs with their sirens flashing silently, surrounded by heavily armed tactical officers in dark blue uniforms.

Agent Miller appeared at the top of the cellar stairs a second later, a sleek black pistol drawn in his right hand. He looked down into the sunlight, his eyes locking onto Elena’s father, who stood calmly in the doorway with the leather ledger held high in his hand.

"It's over, Miller," Elena’s father said, his voice ringing out clear and steady across the yard. "The books are balanced."

Miller raised his weapon toward the old man, a desperate, feral look crossing his face. Before his finger could tighten on the trigger, three red laser dots danced across his chest.

"Drop the weapon! Do it now!" the lead tactical officer roared.

Miller hesitated for a fraction of a second, his gaze flickering between the armed agents and the open freedom of the yard, before slowly letting his arm drop to his side and tossing the pistol onto the grass.
