Chapter 5

Days turned into weeks, and the oppressive silence that had long haunted the Vance estate slowly gave way to the tentative sounds of normal childhood. The heavy damask curtains in the nursery were pulled back permanently, flooding the rooms with warm afternoon sunlight. Leo sat at a low wooden table, intensely focused on a box of watercolor paints, his tongue slightly protruding from the corner of his mouth as he blended shades of blue and green.

Julian leaned against the doorframe, a cup of lukewarm coffee in his hand, watching his son with a quiet smile. The dark circles under the boy’s eyes had faded, replaced by a healthy flush of color in his cheeks. He still startled occasionally at sudden loud noises, but the blind panic that once ruled him was steadily being replaced by a sense of security.

Clara walked up the stairs carrying a tray of sliced apples and crackers, pausing beside Julian with a fond expression. "He finished his reading assignment early today," she whispered proudly. "And he didn't ask once if you were leaving for a trip."

"Good," Julian murmured, setting his mug down on a side table. "I’ve canceled my overseas itinerary for the rest of the quarter. The expansion can wait. My son cannot."

Clara smiled warmly, entering the room to place the snack on the table. Leo looked up immediately, his face lighting up with a bright, open smile that made Julian’s chest ache with gratitude.

"Dad, look! I painted the garden," Leo said, holding up a slightly damp sheet of heavy paper depicting a rather lopsided oak tree under a brilliant yellow sun.

Julian walked over, crouching down to be at eye level with his son. He examined the painting carefully, noting the bold, confident strokes that spoke of a child who no longer feared making mistakes. "It’s magnificent, buddy. I think we should frame it right here on my desk."

Leo giggled, a pure, uninhibited sound that washed away the last lingering ghosts of the past. "Can we go to the park later? Clara said we could feed the ducks."

"We can do anything you want," Julian promised, placing a gentle hand on the boy's light brown hair.

Later that afternoon, the trio walked through the sprawling public park near the estate. Leo ran ahead, chasing a stray golden retriever while laughing breathlessly. Julian and Clara walked side by side along the gravel path, the afternoon breeze rustling the autumn leaves above them.

"You've been a pillar of strength for both of us, Clara," Julian said quietly, looking over at her. "I don't know how I can ever properly thank you."

"You don't need to thank me, Mr. Vance," Clara replied, watching Leo toss a stick for the dog. "Just keep being the father he always needed."
