Chapter 2

The nursery on the third floor was a sanctuary of soft pastels and expensive wooden toys, but tonight it felt like a prison cell. Julian sat on the edge of Leo’s orthopedic mattress, smoothing down the edges of the boy’s light blue collared shirt which was still wrinkled from the hallway floor. Leo’s breathing had finally slowed from ragged gasps to soft, rhythmic sighs as exhaustion pulled him toward a dreamless sleep. Julian watched him with a heavy heart, counting every slight tremor that passed through the child's frame.

Outside the heavy mahogany door, the muted sounds of the household settling into night reminded Julian that life downstairs went on as if nothing had happened. But everything had changed. The illusion of his perfect marriage, carefully constructed over a decade of high-society galas and carefully staged family portraits, lay shattered in the marble foyer. He realized with sickening clarity that he knew almost nothing about what transpired within these walls during his prolonged business absences.

A soft knock interrupted his grim thoughts. The door creaked open just enough for Clara to slip inside. She had changed out of her torn maid uniform into a simple dark cardigan and slacks, though the red mark on her face remained a vivid testament to Eleanor’s casual cruelty. She carried a small glass of warm milk and a damp cloth, moving with the practiced, quiet grace of someone who had spent years walking on eggshells in this mansion.

"How is he?" Clara whispered, her voice rough with fatigue.

"Sleeping," Julian replied quietly, standing up so Clara could tend to the boy’s bruised knee. "Tell me everything, Clara. And don't leave anything out. I need the truth."

Clara set the milk on the nightstand and looked down at Leo with profound tenderness. "It didn't start with slaps, Mr. Vance. It started with isolation. Whenever you flew to London or New York, the rules changed. Madam despised any sign of weakness in him. If he cried for you, she locked him in the walk-in pantry. If he spilled his food, she blamed me and punished us both."

Julian felt a hot surge of anger clawing at his throat, but he forced himself to stay silent, knowing any outburst would wake his son. "Why didn't you come to me? Why didn't you tell someone?"

"Who would believe a maid over the mistress of the estate?" Clara asked bitterly, finally meeting his eyes. "She threatened to ruin my family, to have my husband fired from his position at the docks, and to throw Leo out onto the street if I uttered a single word. Tonight was the first time she struck him so openly, and it was only because you arrived home a day early."

Julian fists clenched at his sides. He had prided himself on being a provider, believing that financial security equated to family happiness. He had been a fool, blind to the monster living in his own bed.
