Chapter 11

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Ballroom gleamed brilliantly, reflecting off the polished marble floors where hundreds of wealthy patrons mingled in designer gowns and tailored tuxedos. Julian stood near the edge of the room, wearing a classic black tuxedo and black bow tie—the exact attire he had worn on the night his world shattered months ago. But tonight, the atmosphere was entirely different. There was no terror in the air, no suffocating dread.

Beside him stood Clara, wearing an elegant emerald-green silk dress that Julian had insisted she select for the occasion. She looked radiant, her initial hesitation giving way to quiet confidence as she surveyed the high-society crowd that had once treated her as invisible.

Across the room, Marcus Sterling stood with a group of nervous associates, glaring daggers across the ballroom at Julian. The Sterling family empire had taken a massive financial hit following Julian’s corporate restructuring and the public fallout of Eleanor’s institutionalization. Marcus wanted blood, but he lacked the leverage to touch Julian now.

"They look like they're planning a funeral," Clara murmured, taking a sip of sparkling water from her crystal flute.

"They are attending the funeral of their own monopoly," Julian replied calmly, keeping his eyes fixed on the assembly. "They believed wealth and intimidation gave them ownership over everyone in their orbit. They are learning the hard way that true power comes from integrity."

Arthur Pendelton walked over, raising his glass in silent toast to Julian. "Brilliant speech tonight, Julian. The board is fully behind your restructuring plan for the charitable foundation. You’ve earned the respect of people who used to view you as just another ruthless tycoon."

"Thank you, Arthur," Julian said, clinking his glass against the older man’s. "I had to learn the hard way what truly matters in this life."

As Arthur drifted away to speak with other patrons, Julian felt a small hand slip into his. He looked down to see Leo—dressed in a miniature black tuxedo tailored to perfection—looking up at him with sleepy eyes. The boy had insisted on attending the first hour of the gala to see his father speak on stage.

"Are we done yet, Dad?" Leo whispered, suppressing a small yawn behind his hand.

Julian chuckled, kneeling down to adjust the boy’s bow tie. "Just about, buddy. Clara arranged for a car to take us home right after this. Are you ready for bed?"

"Yes," Leo nodded, leaning against his father’s shoulder. "Can you read me another chapter of Treasure Island when we get back?"

May you like

"Every single word," Julian promised, picking his son up in his arms just as he had done on the marble floor months ago—only this time, there were no tears, no fear, and no monsters waiting in the dark.
