Chapter 10

The transformation of the Vance estate was swift and thorough. Julian hired contractors to gut the east wing, stripping away the dark, oppressive wallpaper, heavy velvet draperies, and gilded moldings that had defined Eleanor’s reign. In their place, they installed large, sun-drenched rooms featuring warm oak floors, minimalist Scandinavian furniture, and walls painted in soft, inviting tones of cream and sky blue.

Leo was allowed to choose his own bedroom furniture for the first time in his life. He selected a simple white wooden bed and a sprawling desk where he could draw and complete his schoolwork without looking over his shoulder. The atmosphere of fear that had once clung to the hallways like a physical mist was replaced by the smell of fresh paint, sawdust, and home-baked cookies from the kitchen.

One afternoon, as Julian was reviewing architectural blueprints for the garden expansion, Clara walked into his study carrying a freshly pressed suit for an upcoming charity gala he had reluctantly agreed to attend.

"You don't have to go if you aren't ready, Mr. Vance," Clara noted, setting the garment bag over the back of a leather chair. "Society will be whispering about the divorce for months."

"Let them whisper," Julian replied without looking up from his blueprints. "It’s time to show the world that I am not hiding. More importantly, it’s a charity event for pediatric recovery. I’ve agreed to chair the board. We need to step out of the shadows, Clara."

Clara smiled, leaning against the edge of the desk. "You've changed a lot in the last few months, Julian. You used to be invisible in your own home."

Julian looked up, meeting her gaze with a soft, genuine smile. "I was a coward, Clara. I traded my presence for a paycheck, thinking that buying things was the same as being a father. You and Leo woke me up before it was too late."

"You did the hard work when it mattered," she replied quietly.

Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of running footsteps echoing down the hallway. A second later, Leo burst into the study, holding a half-finished model airplane made of balsa wood and glue. His face was smeared with a streak of graphite, and his light blue collared shirt was untucked at the hem.

"Dad! Clara! Look! The wing actually stays on!" Leo announced triumphantly, thrusting the fragile creation toward them.

Julian stood up immediately, adopting an expression of theatrical awe as he inspected the wobbling wing. "Engineering genius, right before my eyes. We might actually make an aerospace designer out of you yet."

May you like

Leo beamed with pride, holding the plane securely against his chest. For Julian, this simple moment of shared joy was worth more than all the billions locked away in his corporate accounts. The ghosts of the past were finally laid to rest, replaced by the bright, unpredictable promise of tomorrow.
