Chapter 9: The Dilemma of Vengeance

Lily sat in her car for an hour, watching the laundromat. A dark, vindictive part of her wanted to walk inside, wearing her expensive coat and flashing her UCLA ID, just to gloat. She wanted to look down at Vanessa and say, “Look at me now.”

She called Vincent. "I saw her," Lily said, her voice tight. "Vanessa. She looks terrible, Vincent. She looks destroyed."

Vincent was quiet for a long moment. "How does it make you feel?"

"I don't know," Lily admitted, tears of frustration in her eyes. "I thought seeing her suffer would make me happy. It just makes me feel sad. Sad that someone could be so empty inside that this is where their hate leads them."

"That sadness, Lily," Vincent replied softly, "is proof that you are nothing like her."
