September arrived with a crisp breeze. Lily stepped onto the sprawling, brick-lined campus of UCLA, the weight of her beige backpack grounding her. It was the exact same backpack Vanessa had used to frame her, but Lily refused to replace it. It was a reminder of what she had survived.
She walked into her first lecture for Social Justice and Law. As she took her seat, a wave of imposter syndrome washed over her. Do I belong here? Am I just the poor orphan who almost went to jail? But as the professor began to speak about systemic inequalities and the power of truth, Lily’s posture straightened. She wasn't a victim anymore; she was a survivor with a purpose. She pulled out her notebook and began to write.
