Chapter 3: A Fall from Grace

While Lily prepared for her upcoming semester, Vanessa’s world was violently unraveling. Stripped of Vincent’s credit cards and evicted from his properties, she found herself standing on a cracked sidewalk in downtown Los Angeles with only a single designer suitcase. Her phone, once buzzing with invitations to galas and brunches, was dead silent. Her "friends"—women who had only loved the wealth she married into—refused her calls.

She checked into a dingy, neon-lit motel off the highway. As she sat on the sagging mattress, the memory of Lily crying on the floor flashed in her mind. Vanessa tried to summon her usual smugness, her defensive anger, but the cold, damp walls of the motel offered no audience for her arrogance. For the first time in her thirty-five years, Vanessa felt the crushing, terrifying weight of sheer vulnerability.
