Chapter 5

The sun dipped lower behind the horizon, casting long, bruised shadows across the abandoned wedding venue. The white folding chairs stood empty, overturned in places where panicked guests had rushed to leave. Police technicians moved methodically around the freshly dug plot, dusting for prints and bagging soil samples. Sarah sat in the back of an ambulance, a paramedic wrapping a warm woolen blanket around her shoulders while checking her vital signs.

Lily sat beside her on the metal bench, clutching a warm cup of apple cider the paramedics had provided. Her fingers were still slightly stained with dark earth, a permanent reminder of the horror she had uncovered earlier that afternoon.

"You did an extraordinary thing today, Lily," Sarah said softly, kissing the top of her daughter's dark pigtails. "You saved my life."

"I was so scared, mom," Lily whispered, her lower lip trembling slightly as the adrenaline finally began to fade from her system. "When I saw the dirt moving... I thought I was too late."

"You were right on time," Sarah assured her, offering a reassuring smile that did not quite reach her tired eyes.

Across the lawn, Arthur and Clara sat in separate police cruisers, their handcuffs clicking softly against the metal window frames. They had been read their rights and questioned briefly before being transported downtown to the precinct. Clara had refused to speak without legal representation, while Arthur had spent his final moments at the venue glaring bitterly in Sarah’s direction, still refusing to accept accountability for his actions.

Chief Henderson walked over to the ambulance, holding a clear plastic evidence bag containing Sarah’s silver charm bracelet, which had been recovered from the edge of the pit. He handed it to Sarah with a respectful nod.

"We've impounded the landscaping equipment," Chief Henderson said quietly. "The forensic team found boot prints matching Arthur’s size eleven dress shoes near the edge of the grave. Combined with your testimony and Lily’s eyewitness account, the district attorney’s office is preparing to file charges of attempted first-degree murder and kidnapping."

Sarah closed her fingers around the silver bracelet, feeling the familiar weight of the metal. "Thank you, Chief. I want to press charges to the fullest extent of the law. There will be no settlements and no quiet agreements."

"Understood," the chief replied. "You'll both need to come down to the station tomorrow morning for formal statements, but for tonight, go home and rest."

As the police cruisers pulled away down the winding driveway, the silence of the evening reclaimed the estate. Sarah took Lily’s small hand in hers, and together they walked away from the white arches and the dark earth, stepping forward into a safer, uncertain, but ultimately liberated future.
