Chapter 4

The distant wail of police sirens grew louder, bouncing off the brick walls of the grand estate and cutting through the heavy silence of the wedding venue. Guests began to quietly gather their belongings, whispering among themselves as they drifted toward the parking lot, eager to distance themselves from the unfolding scandal. Clara stood frozen in her white lace gown, watching her dream wedding dissolve into a crime scene.

Chief Henderson knelt beside Sarah, pulling a clean handkerchief from his pocket and offering it to her. Sarah accepted it with a nod of gratitude, wiping the damp soil from her forehead.

"Can you stand, Sarah?" Chief Henderson asked gently, keeping his professional distance while maintaining a watchful eye on Arthur.

"I can," Sarah replied, her voice gaining strength. She looked down at Lily, who was still clutching the straps of her blue backpack as if it were a shield. "My daughter saved my life. If she hadn't come back from her grandmother's house early, I would be dead beneath those roses."

Arthur took a step forward, his expression shifting from panic to calculated damage control. "Sarah, please, think of Lily. A public scandal will destroy her life. We can handle this quietly, inside the house, like a family."

"We haven't been a family since you decided I was an obstacle to be discarded," Sarah said coldly. She rose to her feet with Marcus's steady support, standing tall despite her mud-stained clothes.

Clara sneer returned, desperate to reclaim some form of control. "You're delusional, Sarah! You've always been unstable. Everyone here saw you wandering around, confused and erratic. You dug that hole yourself in some kind of fugue state!"

Before Sarah could respond, two marked police cruisers turned sharply into the venue’s gravel driveway, their red and blue lights flashing against the white folding chairs and floral arches. Uniformed officers spilled out of the vehicles, quickly securing the perimeter and taping off the freshly dug dirt pit with yellow caution tape.

Arthur’s shoulders slumped. The presence of actual law enforcement stripped away any remaining illusion of control he possessed. He looked at Clara, realizing with sudden clarity that she was calculating how to pin the entire conspiracy solely on him. The fragile alliance built on greed and ambition was already fracturing under the pressure of reality.

Chief Henderson motioned to two of the responding officers. "Secure Mr. Miller and Ms. Vance. We have attempted murder, conspiracy, and evidence tampering to investigate."

As the officers moved in to place handcuffs on Arthur and Clara, Lily buried her face in Sarah’s waist, letting out a long, shuddering sigh. The nightmare in the garden was over, but the difficult journey toward true healing and justice was only just beginning.
